Do you think Flanders should be reunited with the Netherlands?
They have the same language and share lots of things culturally. Moreover, the current political situation in Belgium is not quite working, the Walloons and Flemish don't want to give anything to each other. But what should be done with Brussels when Flanders is united with the Netherlands or at least becomes independent? I just need lots of pros and cons for my debating class. Thank you soooo musch!!

I think Flandres could more easily than any of the two other states be united with Netherlands, in fact Flandres has only been part of Belgium for a few hundred years so the cultural ties are not that deep, and as French was made the official language in Flandres where the population spoke a different language, (although it has now changed to both Flemish and French) I think Flandres could benefit. They would be part of a larger country, and with todays borderless regions in the Eu there would not be much point in keeping alive in the few hundred years old alliance called Belgium :-) With Bruxelles itself it would still be EU residence, but if joining the Netherlands could ofcourse not be capital. The problem is ofcourse that the Bryssel area has both a large French speaking and Flemish speaking population, perhaps you could suggest a division like East and West Berlin, or that Bruxelles became an independant EU state like the Vatican State :-) On the other hand Wallonia would be a tiny state but you could suggest it joining Luxembourg or France. Pros would be that the populations would be in countries that actually speak the same language cons that it would be the richest part of Belgium leaving to join Netherlands You could perhaps include something about the independence wars in former Yugoslavia and discuss the problems or fear of armed conflict? What do you absolutely need in the first two months with a newborn
What do you absolutely need in the first two months with a newborn?
My husband is working in Belgium & I'm 7.5 months into my pregnancy. My husband's job will be done in June & our visas will expire in July. Our son will arrive towards the end of April. I have begun the ordering process for all the gear, clothing, etc., that our son will need. Now that I've picked everything out I've realized there's a ton of stuff. Considering that we will be returning to the US when our son is around 3 months old; what are the items that I absolutely must purchase now & what are the items that can wait to be purchased when we arrive in America? Thank you tons!

I would definately get a pack and play.. You can use that for a crib if you don't co sleep. Diapers & Wipes Maybe a bounce chair ( the seat kind that vibrate and have a little toy bar that goes across the top) my son sat in his chair quite a bit as a newborn bath stuff & lotion diaper rash ointment pacifires (if you want to use them) bottles

Well you obviously need clothing. I suggest just buying mostly 3-6 month clothing, or just a few little onesies for newborns because they grow out of newborn clothing very quickly, and its usually a waste of money. You will need everything any baby would need for clothing: onesies, a few outfits, sleepers, whatever. Other things you need: You need hygiene products... Baby needs to be clean too! I suggest just going to wal-mart or target and buying a gift set of baby hygiene products. You don't necessariy need a baby bath tub but it can be helpful, but you can bathe them in the sink you just have to be careful. You are going to need diapers and wipes obviously, and of course baby powder, and probably a diaper rash creme like a Destin. You need to decide what your going to do for a crib, and then buy a couple fleece blankets, a comforter, a bumper, and a couple sheets in case the baby spits up or urinates in the bed. I would say to hold off on any type of bassinet it's not really necessary. I highly suggest getting a swing. It soothes fussy babies and helps them relax and sleep when you want them to (usually). I would say you could skip the bouncer if you want to. And then travelling baby toys: rattles, little noise makers, tummy time mats, things that stimulate their brain and help them develop.

You could probably use a sling instead of a stroller for the first 3 months. A bassinet will work instead of a crib for now too, or even just a playpen with the bassinet piece in it. Maybe a small travel swing instead of a big one. 0-3 month clothes should fit until you move. Highchair, exersaucer and any other bigger toys can wait. Other than that the only thing you would really need right away is a car seat, but I wouldn't pay to much for one because one from Belgium wont be legal to use in the US so you will end up having to buy a new one when you move anyways (I'd try to borrow one from someone if you can)

Your child can sleep with you or you can make a pallet on the floor for 3 months (come on thumbs down) Toys won't really be that necessary since they aren't getting much hand/eye coordination until 3 months of age.

I only used mine twice) - Breastfeeding pillow (if breastfeeding - kellymom.com is a great breastfeeding site) - Receiving blankets - Vitamin D ( if breastfeeding) - Bottles (if formula feeding) - Formula (if formula feeding ... you can get free samples on their websites... like Enfamil & Nestle) - Bassinet ( I loved it!) - Tub w/ or w/out a sling (I prefered the deep baby tub as her body was completely submerged... she hated being cold) - Wipes - Diapers - Vaseline (thats what I use. It's cheap & it works better than all the other junk out there) - Bunting bag (If you live in a cold climate) - Cotton Swabs for cleaning the umbilical cord) - Breast Pads ( you'll leak) - Tylenol (If you happen to have stitches) - Bibs (she stated drooling really bad at 2 months) - Light blankets - Baby Vibrating Chair ( in the beginning she liked that more than the swing, but now it's all swing) Thats really all I can think of. Toys & what not weren't really used until 2 1/2 months. Best of luck!

The two technologies are incompatible, therefore you won't get any signal in Europe. The only phones that work in both the U.S. and Europe are those of AT&T and T-Mobile (possibly Virgin Mobile too, but who cares), who are the sole providers of "GSM" mobile networks in the U.S.

While money is important, it's more important for the child to know it's father and have a healthy relationship with both parents. Is there anyway you two can work out an agreement that offers both visitation and financial help without getting the government involved?

i have a relative that its station in belgium and some of her friends got vonage as phone company and internet service . i called vonage toget info and they told me a ineeded a internet service so the phone can work well the internet company in belgium (belgiumcom) give u internet but u have to get a phone like as well does anybody know if this is true? i mean her friend dont have a internet provided just vonage would it work if she gets it and

hi, we are stationed in Germany, we did get a local dsl line from a german phone carrier so that our vonage will work. Vonage works on internet so you have to have it. Lately i've been very unhappy with Vonage, they have issues that is such a pain since it is my main tool when working. Check other VoIP service before you commit to vonage.

If you want to have vonage phone for yourself you must have internet hook up yourself . Its the only way it works .

Hi, Just wondering if there are any sports packages available in Belgium to watch rugby league, as I am really wanting to watch many matches of rugby league when I will be moving in July. Will sky multiroom work over there, could I get a sky subcription or is there a belgium tv package in the country that offer this perhaps? Thanks in Advance

First of all let me tell you hat rugby in Belgium is a very very minor sport (just like baseball). You will be very lucky to be able to watch some minor leagues games on saturday morning and I don't think you will find packages. The countries to watch rugby are : France (rugby a 11 and rugby a 13), England, Scotland and Ireland. I very much doubt SKY will work here, as the European TV system is completely different from the US one (PAL or SECAM). But the cable distributors offer over 30 to 40 channels and there is something called Eurosat.

Please help me something on Belgium?
My husband is about to go to Belgium in this late August to pursue his Ph.D degree, then I will come there for family union. I would like to get your advice for some matters in Belgium as follows: Firstly, I wonder if I am allowed to find a job or certain study course in Belgium. His scholarship can cover our life in Belgium, however I want to work to get more. Secondly, I don’t know maximum of how much I am allowed to bring along when I enter Belgium legally. In basball terms pretty good I guess. The Netherlands knocked off Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

Not a lot of ppl here speak english but there are international companies. Since Belgium is a bilingual country you'll have to speak French and Flemish though. And anyway, why'd you wanna come to Belgium? I can't wait to get out of here :/

Unless you have a specialized degree in something , Bachelors or higher, you would have a difficult time finding any job if you do not speak a minimum of English/French or English/Dutch. Even then with a degree, it is hard to come by an English only job! And agreeing with the lady above me, why on earth would you want to come here? I personally cannot wait until my husband gets his Visa and we leave! It is so cold and gloomy here, I do not see what anyone likes about Brussels beyond its good chocolate lol.

It's pretty easy to find work if you speak english but you won't enjoy the stay. The best thing about working in another country is being able to speak to the people you work with in their own language. However, most multinational companies have also pretty international staff so a lot of companies have an english language rule. Both countries are quite nice to live in (if you are NOT a sun and heat fanatic). And people are very open and welcoming of foreigners. Again, always easier if you make the effort and learn their language. Dutch/flemish are not that difficult to learn. I moved to Brussels 4 years ago for work and learned the language pretty quickly (German/french native)

Where is the best country to live & work in
Where is the best country to live & work in?
Looking for a safe country, good weather, good education & friendly people. I'm from Belgium, but living in South Africa at the moment. My husband & I want to start a family, but too scared in this country... Very unstable at the moment & education is dropping. Too much crime here too.... Would appreciate different countries so i can compare.

hi everybody.im from south africa and working in belgium untill next year.from the moment i arrived here everybody tought i was from brazil because i am a coloured.i was just wondering if you also think there are only black people in south africa because it makes me sad to know that some people from other countries dont know about all the different cultures and races in my country. from a girl who's proudly south african.

No, I don't think that there are only black people in South Africa. There are people off all colors in pretty much every country. Many people don't know anything about other cultures and you're right, that is pretty sad.

It depends in which part of Belgium you live. In general the Flemish people know South Africa very well (because of the Afrikaans that has some roots with Flemish and Dutch). Your country is one of the top countries in Africa that is visited by the Belgians. Don't be sad, your countries is much more known in Belgium than you think. And you may be proud on your country. They may be good with guns on a moment's notice, but are they equipped to deal with children and their parents on a daily basis for years? Or are you implying that an educator should carry a gun? I've searched in the web but i can't find a neurosurgeon who is willing to give his own email address. Without an email address how am i supposed to contact one. a couple of months ago i sent an email to a neurosurgeon working in Belgium who was the first to report on the use of DBS for intractable OCD, but he never answered me. They say there's hope for us who suffer from intractable OCD but if you can't get in touch with a specialist then how are they going to help you. People are dying out there because surgery is not offered to them and this makes them feel very desperate. Conventional therapy is often not effective for some OCD sufferers. What should we do? Leave them get worse and eventually die? I don't understand this kind of indifference. People think of cancer as the most malignant form of desease ever, but severe mental illness is the most malignant disease you can have. It destroys relationships, careers, knowledge, way of thinking, personality, and finally people end up totally isolated without any sort of self-confidence or hope, loose touch with their past (even worse than loosing touch with the present reality). Some also commit suicide. This is not right. Real mental illness is not a joke! I have heard people abusing with terms inherent to mental illness, and some have even used the term depression fashion. Depression is not a fashion for a depression sufferer, at least if you are not psychotic.

You can probably speak to someone in his/her department and leave a message. You would probably also have better luck if your psychiatrist contacted the neurosurgery department on your behalf -- they will answer your doctor faster than they will answer you in a request for information. I really sympathize with you and hope you find relief soon.

Tax Question: US citizen working abroad?
I will be going on an assignment overseas and have some tax questions. I'm a US citizen and own a house in my home state in the Northeast. I will be renting an apartment in Austria and working in Belgium during the workweek (flying back to Austria on weekends). I'll probably spend 192 days in Belgium, 144 days in Austria, 22 days in US and 7 days in the UK. I may do this for 1-2 years tops and then return to the US. Do I file taxes only in the USA? If I spend more time in the US, do I avoid paying taxes in these foreign countries? If so, how many days in the US? What would be the ideal set up for least tax liability, even if it means staying in one of these countries for longer. Ideally I would only owe US taxes, but wanted to know what the law says. Yearly salary would be over $100K. Employer is US based.

If you work in another country, you pay tax to that country. Within the EU, you would not have to pay tax to the country of residence, if different. If you are a US citizen, you must report ALL your income to the IRS, regardless of location where you worked. However, you can claim a deduction for the amount of tax paid to the country where you worked. Since European income taxes are generally higher than the US, this would probably bring your US tax liability down to zero. But you still have to file.

How does France, Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden compare in terms of accepting American students with ease?
I am trying to figure out the differences in: Ease of acquiring an apartment, Enrolling in a University, Obtaining a student Visa, Working part-time, General feelings towards American students etc...... Thanks so much

I can help with Denmark and Sweden. As an undergrad student, you can do an exchange with your home university. Language isn't a requirement beforehand, but you will take Swedish or Danish classes while studying. If you want to do a degree program as an undergrad, it is a bit harder. You need to fulfill the language requirements first, which means proficiency equivalent to a Swedish/Danish university student (usually at least a year of full time study). You also need to meet entry requirements, which for most of Europe mean an extra year higher education study after high school. Masters and PhD programs are available (limited) in English, more often in science or technology fields, without the language requirement. Housing can be very difficult to find in major Swedish cities, and unless you have Swedish fluency, work will be even harder. It took me two years to find work in Sweden, and it wasn't from lack of trying. Most housing associations have a rental waiting list, which ranges 6 months to many years (Stockholm center is 20+ years). Students have more available housing, but there is also sometimes a waiting list for these flats, and you will need somewhere to live meanwhile. Apply early. I'm not sure how housing works in Denmark, but friends have said it is easier to find than in Sweden. You have to prove you have the funds for living costs and any fees, before you can get a visa. Basically, you need to be able to support yourself without work, because jobs aren't easy to find especially in a major city. There are many immigrants and young Swedes vying for the same work, most with language in their favor. You shouldn't receive any negative treatment as an American student, although you could face hiring discrimination as an immigrant (it doesn't matter where you are from, if it's outside Scandinavia).

Am i eligible for the foreign trainees program in japan?
i've hear of a foreign trainee program to work and live in japan for three year. one year of training and two year of work. i'm from Belgium, am i eligible for it?

Hm..I don't think so. The "trainee program" is for developing countries. Belgium is enough advanced. BTW, I would like to say thank you for Belgium royal family. They often invite Japanese Imperial family members to Belgium. And Belgium royal families also come to Japan often. Your Princess Alix (Alix Princess de Ligne) came to Japan and studied at Waseda University, probably in 2005 or 2006. http://yahatazushi.com/image/article/la%20princess.jpg Both counties have good relations always.

They often invite Japanese Imperial family members to Belgium. And Belgium royal families also come to Japan often.
