Do you think Flanders should be reunited with the Netherlands

Do you think Flanders should be reunited with the Netherlands?
They have the same language and share lots of things culturally. Moreover, the current political situation in Belgium is not quite working, the Walloons and Flemish don't want to give anything to each other. But what should be done with Brussels when Flanders is united with the Netherlands or at least becomes independent? I just need lots of pros and cons for my debating class. Thank you soooo musch!!

Ee gads. Never going to happen!

I think Flandres could more easily than any of the two other states be united with Netherlands, in fact Flandres has only been part of Belgium for a few hundred years so the cultural ties are not that deep, and as French was made the official language in Flandres where the population spoke a different language, (although it has now changed to both Flemish and French) I think Flandres could benefit. They would be part of a larger country, and with todays borderless regions in the Eu there would not be much point in keeping alive in the few hundred years old alliance called Belgium :-) With Bruxelles itself it would still be EU residence, but if joining the Netherlands could ofcourse not be capital. The problem is ofcourse that the Bryssel area has both a large French speaking and Flemish speaking population, perhaps you could suggest a division like East and West Berlin, or that Bruxelles became an independant EU state like the Vatican State :-) On the other hand Wallonia would be a tiny state but you could suggest it joining Luxembourg or France. Pros would be that the populations would be in countries that actually speak the same language cons that it would be the richest part of Belgium leaving to join Netherlands You could perhaps include something about the independence wars in former Yugoslavia and discuss the problems or fear of armed conflict? Good luck with your debate.

What do you absolutely need in the first two months with a newborn

What do you absolutely need in the first two months with a newborn?
My husband is working in Belgium & I'm 7.5 months into my pregnancy. My husband's job will be done in June & our visas will expire in July. Our son will arrive towards the end of April. I have begun the ordering process for all the gear, clothing, etc., that our son will need. Now that I've picked everything out I've realized there's a ton of stuff. Considering that we will be returning to the US when our son is around 3 months old; what are the items that I absolutely must purchase now & what are the items that can wait to be purchased when we arrive in America? Thank you tons!
Newborn & Baby - 6 Answers

I would definately get a pack and play.. You can use that for a crib if you don't co sleep. Diapers & Wipes Maybe a bounce chair ( the seat kind that vibrate and have a little toy bar that goes across the top) my son sat in his chair quite a bit as a newborn bath stuff & lotion diaper rash ointment pacifires (if you want to use them) bottles
2 :
Well you obviously need clothing. I suggest just buying mostly 3-6 month clothing, or just a few little onesies for newborns because they grow out of newborn clothing very quickly, and its usually a waste of money. You will need everything any baby would need for clothing: onesies, a few outfits, sleepers, whatever. Other things you need: You need hygiene products... Baby needs to be clean too! I suggest just going to wal-mart or target and buying a gift set of baby hygiene products. You don't necessariy need a baby bath tub but it can be helpful, but you can bathe them in the sink you just have to be careful. You are going to need diapers and wipes obviously, and of course baby powder, and probably a diaper rash creme like a Destin. You need to decide what your going to do for a crib, and then buy a couple fleece blankets, a comforter, a bumper, and a couple sheets in case the baby spits up or urinates in the bed. I would say to hold off on any type of bassinet it's not really necessary. I highly suggest getting a swing. It soothes fussy babies and helps them relax and sleep when you want them to (usually). I would say you could skip the bouncer if you want to. And then travelling baby toys: rattles, little noise makers, tummy time mats, things that stimulate their brain and help them develop.
3 :
You could probably use a sling instead of a stroller for the first 3 months. A bassinet will work instead of a crib for now too, or even just a playpen with the bassinet piece in it. Maybe a small travel swing instead of a big one. 0-3 month clothes should fit until you move. Highchair, exersaucer and any other bigger toys can wait. Other than that the only thing you would really need right away is a car seat, but I wouldn't pay to much for one because one from Belgium wont be legal to use in the US so you will end up having to buy a new one when you move anyways (I'd try to borrow one from someone if you can)
4 :
The list above and: A Carseat! Stroller Baby Carrier/Sling A playmat. He isn't going to be happy just sitting in the bouncer all day, every day for three months. Rattles. Other toys. Are you breastfeeding? Pumping? Formula feeding? You need all the equipment for that.
5 :
SLEEP!!! Honestly, if you were wanting to get by on the bare minimum... Lots of onesies, receiving blankets, and diapers. Bottles if you are not breastfeeding. Socks. Your child can sleep with you or you can make a pallet on the floor for 3 months (come on thumbs down) Toys won't really be that necessary since they aren't getting much hand/eye coordination until 3 months of age.
6 :
Now... - onesies - sleepers - mittens (so they dont scratch the face) - nail clippers - hair brush/comb - thermometer - gripe water - oval - towels - face clothes - shampoo/body was ( I use Johnson's BedTime Wash & love it!) - Lotion - Hat - Car seat (don't really need a stroller... I only used mine twice) - Breastfeeding pillow (if breastfeeding - kellymom.com is a great breastfeeding site) - Receiving blankets - Vitamin D ( if breastfeeding) - Bottles (if formula feeding) - Formula (if formula feeding ... you can get free samples on their websites... like Enfamil & Nestle) - Bassinet ( I loved it!) - Tub w/ or w/out a sling (I prefered the deep baby tub as her body was completely submerged... she hated being cold) - Wipes - Diapers - Vaseline (thats what I use. It's cheap & it works better than all the other junk out there) - Bunting bag (If you live in a cold climate) - Cotton Swabs for cleaning the umbilical cord) - Breast Pads ( you'll leak) - Tylenol (If you happen to have stitches) - Bibs (she stated drooling really bad at 2 months) - Light blankets - Baby Vibrating Chair ( in the beginning she liked that more than the swing, but now it's all swing) Thats really all I can think of. Toys & what not weren't really used until 2 1/2 months. Best of luck!

No, it won't work. The reason is that the Verizon network is based on a network technology called "CDMA". In Europe, the only technology used is "GSM". The two technologies are incompatible, therefore you won't get any signal in Europe. The only phones that work in both the U.S. and Europe are those of AT&T and T-Mobile (possibly Virgin Mobile too, but who cares), who are the sole providers of "GSM" mobile networks in the U.S.

What should a mother do when she got pregnant and the father offers her the following choices

What should a mother do when she got pregnant and the father offers her the following choices?
What should a mother do when she got pregnant and the father offers her the following choices? This is how the system works in Belgium. Most man will give the mother choices A,B,C. In American women will make a man pay court order child support for the next 18 years. A: Father will see his daughter every weekend, and she will get not child support. (mother should give the father this at least). B: Give the father 50/50 custody and get no child support. C: Give the father the primary care giver and mother does not pay father child support, but gets to see her every day. D: If the father says that he does not want any thing to do with the child, the mother does not get child support. This is legal in Belgium, because the government will put the mother on welfare and tax payers will pay for medical insurance, put a roof over her head and money for food and clothing. (Father will take you to court if you give him this option.) In Belgium man do not pay child support as in America. Man will only finically support there children outside the marriage by buying them food and clothing whenever they are with the father. Only American man wills generally voluntary pay child support but there are some man will pay for supplies like married people but not many. Most women will give 50/50 custody in case of a divorced to the father as required by law. A father can only be made to pay child support if he does not take 50/50 custody in a divorce.

You didn't say whether or not the man wants to be there in the child's life. While money is important, it's more important for the child to know it's father and have a healthy relationship with both parents. Is there anyway you two can work out an agreement that offers both visitation and financial help without getting the government involved?

hi, we are stationed in Germany, we did get a local dsl line from a german phone carrier so that our vonage will work. Vonage works on internet so you have to have it. Lately i've been very unhappy with Vonage, they have issues that is such a pain since it is my main tool when working. Check other VoIP service before you commit to vonage.

If you want to have vonage phone for yourself you must have internet hook up yourself . Its the only way it works .

Belgium: Sky Sports or Equivalent in the country

Belgium: Sky Sports or Equivalent in the country?
Hi, Just wondering if there are any sports packages available in Belgium to watch rugby league, as I am really wanting to watch many matches of rugby league when I will be moving in July. Will sky multiroom work over there, could I get a sky subcription or is there a belgium tv package in the country that offer this perhaps? Thanks in Advance

First of all let me tell you hat rugby in Belgium is a very very minor sport (just like baseball). You will be very lucky to be able to watch some minor leagues games on saturday morning and I don't think you will find packages. The countries to watch rugby are : France (rugby a 11 and rugby a 13), England, Scotland and Ireland. I very much doubt SKY will work here, as the European TV system is completely different from the US one (PAL or SECAM). But the cable distributors offer over 30 to 40 channels and there is something called Eurosat.
2 :
Albert - you never know, maybe he is NOT American (there are other English speakers around you know), but thanks Anyway Fred, I'm in NL not Belgium so I can't answer you about the tv channels on Belgium tv but I know that Sky is used by some Brits in NL, so should work in Belgium as well There is an expat site in NL which is English spoken and expats can ask/answer questions which all tend to be like this. I checked and Belgium also has a version and has the same UK forum. http://forum.expatica.com/UK-Forum-f9.html I did a quick scan and there are two posts related to this (maybe more as I didn't check thoroughly) and if these don't help then you can raise the question there and chances are you will get an answer. http://forum.expatica.com/Software-Sky-Causing-Problems-Sky-systems-t70571.html http://forum.expatica.com/Sky-Digital-Sky-Installations-t51864.html It's a really good site to get info especially when you are new to the country. Good luck

Please help me something on Belgium

Please help me something on Belgium?
My husband is about to go to Belgium in this late August to pursue his Ph.D degree, then I will come there for family union. I would like to get your advice for some matters in Belgium as follows: Firstly, I wonder if I am allowed to find a job or certain study course in Belgium. His scholarship can cover our life in Belgium, however I want to work to get more. Secondly, I don’t know maximum of how much I am allowed to bring along when I enter Belgium legally. Lastly, can you advise me on Bank I should open our account in Belgium?

1. If you are not a national of the EU you are not allowed to work. However as a family member of an individual residing in Belgium this may change matters and you should check with the Belgian embassy in your country. However be advised that in order to be competitive on the labour market you need at least a bachelors degree and you need to speak fluently English, French and Flemish. (German and or Spanish as an extra would be useful). 2.Are you sure that the income from the scholarship covers the cost of living for both of you? Cost of living in Euros is extremely high and you could face some unpleasant surprises. 3. How much can you bring with you? See Belgian embassy. 4. Bank: Fortis Bank or ING. Both have agencies all over the place. However be advised that in most of those agencies there is no personnel attending the public for day to day operations. Everything is done by automatic machines (type ATM) with indications in Flemish or French or alternatively by internet.
2 :
1) of course you can why can't you, the is no rules of who can and who can't get a job or study. 2) as much as you want to, just make sure you have a moving company and take as much as you would on a holiday when YOU go on a plane. 3) the best bank companies are KBC, Argenta ,deutch bank
3 :
More info about working in Belgium: http://www.belgium.be/en/work/coming_to_work_in_belgium/ If you are not allowed to have a job, you can always do volunteer work. Studying in Belgium: http://www.belgium.be/en/education/coming_to_study_in_belgium/ At least you can become a "free" student to follow the lessons at university but you can not do exams. And there are many other courses (like learning languages or other things). Of course most of them are in Dutch (Flanders region) or French (Wallon region). In Brussels it will be easier to find also courses in English, and also the university cities like Gent, Leuven, Antwerpen have more possibilities. More information about moving to Belgium: http://www.belgium.be/en/housing/moving_to_belgium/ The major banking brands who cover all services and are all around the country are KBC, ING, Dexia and BNP Fortis Paribas. Only KBC is still a Belgium company, ING is Dutch, Dexia and BNP Fortis Paribas are French. They have not the cheapest fees or the hightest rates but have the best service and widest range of products. Beside that you have tow major types of banks: smaller Belgian banks who cover most of the country but have a smaller range of products (like Argenta, Centea, Landbouwkrediet, Credit Agricole); and international banks who operate on local Belgium market but have only offices in the big cities (Deutsch Bank, Citibank) or the internet (Rabobank). They give the best price for (some) basic products but be careful about hidden costs (like for internationally bank transfers, extra bank cards,...)

Not a lot of ppl here speak english but there are international companies. Since Belgium is a bilingual country you'll have to speak French and Flemish though. And anyway, why'd you wanna come to Belgium? I can't wait to get out of here :/
3 :
Unless you have a specialized degree in something , Bachelors or higher, you would have a difficult time finding any job if you do not speak a minimum of English/French or English/Dutch. Even then with a degree, it is hard to come by an English only job! And agreeing with the lady above me, why on earth would you want to come here? I personally cannot wait until my husband gets his Visa and we leave! It is so cold and gloomy here, I do not see what anyone likes about Brussels beyond its good chocolate lol.
4 :
It's pretty easy to find work if you speak english but you won't enjoy the stay. The best thing about working in another country is being able to speak to the people you work with in their own language. However, most multinational companies have also pretty international staff so a lot of companies have an english language rule. Both countries are quite nice to live in (if you are NOT a sun and heat fanatic). And people are very open and welcoming of foreigners. Again, always easier if you make the effort and learn their language. Dutch/flemish are not that difficult to learn. I moved to Brussels 4 years ago for work and learned the language pretty quickly (German/french native)

It depends in which part of Belgium you live. In general the Flemish people know South Africa very well (because of the Afrikaans that has some roots with Flemish and Dutch). Your country is one of the top countries in Africa that is visited by the Belgians. Don't be sad, your countries is much more known in Belgium than you think. And you may be proud on your country. Loved it also when I've visited it.

3 dead 12 wounded in attack on day care center in Belgium? Wouldn't a GUN on the premises have prevented this

3 dead 12 wounded in attack on day care center in Belgium? Wouldn't a GUN on the premises have prevented this?
Gun control doesn't work even in countries where guns are illegal...because there is more than one way to skin a cat!...or children for that matter..I say if the director of the center had a GUN...the only dead person would be the perpetrator!
Current Events - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
probably not.......
2 :
You obviously were not there nor anyone else most likely on answers so no one would be able to say what could of stopped this.
3 :
There is a good possibility that the number of victims would have been far less.
4 :
No, a weapon isn't any good unless it is wielded by someone who is trained to use it. If the daycare center had security then less people might have come out of it unscathed. You also have to remember that a knife is silent and deadly. When would the director of the center know that something was amiss?
5 :
Who would keep a gun at a day care center where the odds of being attacked by a psycho are much less than the odds of a child accidentally being shot?
6 :
Listen to yourself, a GUN in a CHILDCARE center!!!! How STUPID do you have to be? Don't get me wrong here, I have my hunter safety card, as does my husband, mother, and all three children, my entire family actually. All of us own guns (for hunting purposes, not for play or protection) I am not interested in anyone putting gun control laws in place, and would vote against it if on a ballot. But seriously, a gun in a childcare center? You can't have a gun in a place where there are many children being cared for. And even if you did it would have to be under lock and key to make sure the kids didn't get it and kill or maim themselves. In which place it would be no good in the event of a surprise attack, like in Belgium, the person in charge wouldn't have had time to get to it anyway. how idiotic......to think....
7 :
No. What you fail to realize is that people who own guns - and can use them - have a certain personality ( soldiers, police officers, etc). They may be good with guns on a moment's notice, but are they equipped to deal with children and their parents on a daily basis for years? Or are you implying that an educator should carry a gun? Would this person be able to use it? Would this person be able to kill? Also, guns and children don't mix. So, think this through....Two children died in Chinatown yesterday by an unoccupied van which backed into them. They were 3 and 4 years old. 11 injured.... You can not prevent every accident and/or crime.
8 :
Self defense is always a good idea and is a basic human right. Defense of others, especially children is also a basic human right. These rights are not granted by governments, they are basic human rights, enjoyed by all people in the world. Any government who revokes or denies these rights must be removed and replaced. Criminals and other human animal predators will always have and use guns. No matter what any government says or does. 911 should be used to report the death of the criminal attacker by an armed defender. Not to report the death of a victim of the crime. Look at the two answers above who are just beside themselves that there should be a gun in a child care center. Hello? We wouldn't be having this conversation if there was no gun in the child care center.
9 :
You wanted a gun in the hands of 3 year olds? You might be crazier than the psycho who did this atrocity.

How can i contact a neurosurgeon working in Europe and specializing in the neurosurgery for OCD

How can i contact a neurosurgeon working in Europe and specializing in the neurosurgery for OCD?
I've searched in the web but i can't find a neurosurgeon who is willing to give his own email address. Without an email address how am i supposed to contact one. a couple of months ago i sent an email to a neurosurgeon working in Belgium who was the first to report on the use of DBS for intractable OCD, but he never answered me. They say there's hope for us who suffer from intractable OCD but if you can't get in touch with a specialist then how are they going to help you. People are dying out there because surgery is not offered to them and this makes them feel very desperate. Conventional therapy is often not effective for some OCD sufferers. What should we do? Leave them get worse and eventually die? I don't understand this kind of indifference. People think of cancer as the most malignant form of desease ever, but severe mental illness is the most malignant disease you can have. It destroys relationships, careers, knowledge, way of thinking, personality, and finally people end up totally isolated without any sort of self-confidence or hope, loose touch with their past (even worse than loosing touch with the present reality). Some also commit suicide. This is not right. Real mental illness is not a joke! I have heard people abusing with terms inherent to mental illness, and some have even used the term depression fashion. Depression is not a fashion for a depression sufferer, at least if you are not psychotic.

The best way to contact a neurosurgeon is to call the hospital he/she is practicing in and leave a message for someone to call you back. You can probably speak to someone in his/her department and leave a message. You would probably also have better luck if your psychiatrist contacted the neurosurgery department on your behalf -- they will answer your doctor faster than they will answer you in a request for information. I really sympathize with you and hope you find relief soon.

Tax Question: US citizen working abroad

Tax Question: US citizen working abroad?
I will be going on an assignment overseas and have some tax questions. I'm a US citizen and own a house in my home state in the Northeast. I will be renting an apartment in Austria and working in Belgium during the workweek (flying back to Austria on weekends). I'll probably spend 192 days in Belgium, 144 days in Austria, 22 days in US and 7 days in the UK. I may do this for 1-2 years tops and then return to the US. Do I file taxes only in the USA? If I spend more time in the US, do I avoid paying taxes in these foreign countries? If so, how many days in the US? What would be the ideal set up for least tax liability, even if it means staying in one of these countries for longer. Ideally I would only owe US taxes, but wanted to know what the law says. Yearly salary would be over $100K. Employer is US based.

If you work in another country, you pay tax to that country. Within the EU, you would not have to pay tax to the country of residence, if different. If you are a US citizen, you must report ALL your income to the IRS, regardless of location where you worked. However, you can claim a deduction for the amount of tax paid to the country where you worked. Since European income taxes are generally higher than the US, this would probably bring your US tax liability down to zero. But you still have to file.

I can help with Denmark and Sweden. As an undergrad student, you can do an exchange with your home university. Language isn't a requirement beforehand, but you will take Swedish or Danish classes while studying. If you want to do a degree program as an undergrad, it is a bit harder. You need to fulfill the language requirements first, which means proficiency equivalent to a Swedish/Danish university student (usually at least a year of full time study). You also need to meet entry requirements, which for most of Europe mean an extra year higher education study after high school. Masters and PhD programs are available (limited) in English, more often in science or technology fields, without the language requirement. Housing can be very difficult to find in major Swedish cities, and unless you have Swedish fluency, work will be even harder. It took me two years to find work in Sweden, and it wasn't from lack of trying. Most housing associations have a rental waiting list, which ranges 6 months to many years (Stockholm center is 20+ years). Students have more available housing, but there is also sometimes a waiting list for these flats, and you will need somewhere to live meanwhile. Apply early. I'm not sure how housing works in Denmark, but friends have said it is easier to find than in Sweden. You have to prove you have the funds for living costs and any fees, before you can get a visa. Basically, you need to be able to support yourself without work, because jobs aren't easy to find especially in a major city. There are many immigrants and young Swedes vying for the same work, most with language in their favor. You shouldn't receive any negative treatment as an American student, although you could face hiring discrimination as an immigrant (it doesn't matter where you are from, if it's outside Scandinavia).

Hm..I don't think so. The "trainee program" is for developing countries. Belgium is enough advanced. BTW, I would like to say thank you for Belgium royal family. They often invite Japanese Imperial family members to Belgium. And Belgium royal families also come to Japan often. Your Princess Alix (Alix Princess de Ligne) came to Japan and studied at Waseda University, probably in 2005 or 2006. http://yahatazushi.com/image/article/la%20princess.jpg Both counties have good relations always.

Why do my video's not work on my KS360 ?
Hey ! I live in Belgium and I have a KS360. When I wanna watch my video's ( I've downloaded them on Limewire ) , my phone says that the phone doesn't support the resolution. Does somebody know what I have to do that I can watch them ?

your KS360 plays H263 & MPEG4 video formats. MP4 videos also differs in video resolution, some are 320 x 240 at 30fps, 320 x 240 at 15fps, 368 x 208 at 29.97 fps, 176 x 144 at 15 fps. The KS360 supports 128 x 96 pixels, 176 x 144 pixels and 320 x 240 pixels resolution and maximum of 15 fps. be sure your video conforms to this resolution sizes. however you can use a video converter software to convert other video formats to the resolution I stated above to become compliant and playable in your LG KS360. hope this helps. +8+

I am on a dependet Visa, as my husband works here. We would be staying in Belgium for another year or 2 .?
I am an HR proffessional. and I want to find work or a parttime job, Is there an option or some creteria by which I can get a job.I also understand as I am not a EU citizen I might not be preffered.

1 :
Forget it. If your husband's work visa, therefore the dependent's visa, expires in another year or so, don't bother trying to get work authorization. Job preferences are Belgians, then other EU workers, so you have little chance of getting employment. Furthermore, if you really are an HR professional (and if you were, you would know the answer to the question!), you have to know Belgian & EU employment regulations, work visa requirements, etc. Therefore, you are not at all qualified to do the type of work you want. And finally, by the time you got authorization (if you could), and actually found a job (if you could), your husband's visa would expire and you have to return to your own country. Given the state of the job markets worldwide, you had better start looking right away for a job in your own country to start upon expiration of your husband's visa. He needs to start looking pretty soon, too. It is no longer unusual to spend 9 to 12 months in an intensive job search to find a job.
2 :
You would have to change your visa status, which would be difficult. Therefore, I think that you are out of luck.
3 :
Check job offers on www.leforem.be or www.actiris.be or www.vdab.be and apply through the internet. Also on www.monster.be You might also contact directly some interim agencies like Randstadt, Vedior, etc. There are some job offers in the English-speaking monthly, The Bulletin. Maybe your husband's country embassy or consulate could employ you. Your potential employer would do the necessary steps to get you a change of visa and you might be lucky. Also if you have unusual abilities (like speaking an unusual foreign language) it will be easier to find legal employment.

Hello there, Im in the UK. I may not be correct but i think that you have to do a full UK driving test to get a uk driving licence as the road systems/signs etc differ from those in belgium. Also there is the obvious other side of the road thing!! I would start by applying for the provisional licence which you can do here:http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringtransactions/BeforeyouapplyA/DG_10032690 There are requirements you have to meet, they are listed. Once you have done this you will be able to practise on uk roads and take your theroy/hazard recognition test - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/TheoryTest/DG_4022536 Once the above is done you will be able to book your practical test and fingers crossed pass!! - https://pt.dsa.gov.uk/tests/online_booking_1.asp Hope this helps and good luck

English speaking looking for work in Antwerp

English speaking looking for work in Antwerp?
I have friends that I am hopefully moving in with over in Belgium in a few months but I was curious to find out how I would find work in Antwerp? Does anyone know how an English speaker would go around getting a job in the city? Internet sites, newpapers etc...?

Horrid place; try nearby Brussels for more opportunities! It has the major advantage of being francophone for the most part! Who wants to learn Flemish unless you really have to??!
2 :
You could start by learning Dutch. It will improve your chances to land a job. Because unless you have special qualifications, it's likely going to be very difficult to find one or they will be minimum wage/horrible hour jobs. Job sites available in English: http://english.monster.be/ http://www.stepstone.be/en/ Other job sites: Jobs specific to antwerpen: http://jobs.gva.be/ Flemish regional agency responsible for activating job seekers: www.vdab.be General job site: www.vacature.be Other tips is to register yourself at interim offices in Antwerpen.
3 :
Depends on what kind of work you look for. But first of all you need to know if you are allowed to work at all in Belgium. Check this site of the Belgian government: http://www.belgium.be/en/work/ If you have a work permit and all other papers, I think a good start are the agencies for interim jobs. You find offices of different agencies over the city. Take a walk at the Frankrijklei to see some of them. The sites are in Dutch but in the offices they will help you in English.
4 :
You're not saying if you are a trades person or an office worker. And I take it you are an EU national... Bear in mind that in Belgium they expect you to have a diploma for just about everything. The latest they are talking of in a diploma in chip frying! If you do have qualifications you could get them equalised to Belgian equivalent, it might help you get a better job. http://www.google.co.uk/#q=buitenlandse+diploma+gelijkstelling&fp=4287dfd63891046d&hl=en, click on the first link for more info although it is only in Dutch. If you have no qualification, GCSE or even A-level you will most likely be looking at production work, horeca (catering) or another menially low-paid job and agencies probably would be your best bet. Also bear in mind there is no casual work in Belgium other than seasonal in horticulture/agriculture. If you are a trades person and have a skill to sell you might find it easier to get a decent paid job and it would be worth checking the VDAB site. For the rest most of their vacancies require 'Goed Nederlands' with very few that will accept 'Beperkt Nederlands'
5 :
A. Which nationality are you and in consequence are you allowed to work in the EU? B. Be advised that for all executive positions you need to speak fluent Dutch, French and English. If you can throw in German and or Spanish so much the better. C. As Taaner writes the place to look for OUTSOURCING jobs is the Frankrijklei, but unless your name is Beckham I seriously doubt about your possibility for a job.

of course since it's in the eu though I'm not sure about university but i myself lived in amsterdam and my dad with a british passport worked there for several years.
2 :
Being a European Union citizen he can live, study, and work in Gemany without the need to get permits. He just needs to comply with the law applying to German citizens. http://ec.europa.eu/eures/main.jsp?catId=8105&acro=living&lang=en&parentId=7745&countryId=DE&living= Based on your additional question: He will need to get registered at his place of residence (same as in Belgium), and he will need to obtain a Social Security Card (Sozialversicherungsausweis) and a Tax Identification Number (TIN) before he can start working in Germany..
3 :
Yes. Both countries are members of the EU so a Belgian has the absolute right to live, work and study in Germany. He will need to register with local authorities in Germany once he is working - that's German law - but his Belgian passport is all he needs.

Student Working Under the Table In Belgium

Student Working Under the Table In Belgium
How can I find a Job working under the Table in Belgium. I know it is easier in Barcelona and Rome because of all the tourists. I need to find a job in Brussels. Anyone have some real concrete ideas. I know about bars and hostels. I am looking to find a network of people.

Look up the "Agences d'Interim" but this will make it official. You could clean in a private house, hotelrooms or clean dishes in a hotel/restaurant/café. Anything that has to do with a job "behind the scene" in the horeca sector really. Be aware that certain bosses pay only part of what was negociated - or do not pay at all - their people who work "in black" and that you won't have any way to complain, to get your money paid or sue them. Why don't you try to work openly...students don't pay taxes..if they work under a certain amount of hours per month. Check out agencies dealing with "temporary work". There are several of them on the Place de Brouckère (downtown) and also on the Avenue Louise (Uptown). Carrefour, Colruyt, Delhaize or any other supermarket are always looking for students during the holidays to replace their regular staff who are off. Be aware also that students can only work 'officially" during certain months. Unless you are already doing the full amount of hours legally allowed to a student, you have absolutely no advantage in working "sous la table!" I wish you all the best and hope I could be of some help.
2 :
Belgian students (and I suppose this is the same for foreign students) can work 23 days during in July/August/September and 23 days between January, October-December without losing their student status. As a non-resident you only need to pay taxes if you are in Belgium more than 183 days...maybe that's the case for you. The advantage of official work is that you are sure you will be paid plus you get paid for the legal holidays during your contract PLUS you get also an end of year bonus (legal) and part of your holiday for Y+1 is paid. For each month you have worked as an employee you get 2 days extra paid for your holidays in the year after that.
3 :
Do the walk and be bold. Go into the places that look as if they might and ask if they have work. Only after they have said yes you could ask them if it is under the Table or not. I can only assume you would need a working permit and that would be the reasons you are not going through the agencies. There is under the table work in Belgium but but I would imagine it is getting fewer especially in the horeca. When caught you AND the employer will get a fine.

Unlike the USA, EU countries don't have a visa lottery. Unless you are moving for family reunification, or have a specific job offer for a skilled position and you have the requisite qualifications, you cannot move to Europe.
2 :
If you have no claim to citizenship of an EU member state then you need to apply for a visa to live & work in the one of the countries you're interested in Look at the websites for the Embassies of Germany, Belgium & The Netherlands, they will have information on applying for visas German Embassy http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/en/04__Legal/02__Directory__Services/01__Visa/__Visa.html Belgian Embassy http://www.diplobel.us/TravelingBelgium/Visas/Employees.asp Embassy of The Netherlands http://dc.the-netherlands.org/Services/Consular_services/Visa Go to your local library or nearest big bookstore, in the travel section there should be books about living & working in those countries, they should go through the legal ins & outs of living there and offer advice on finding work If you google you'll also find forums for Americans living in various European countries offering advice on how to move to them

USPS stealing anything coming from abroad ..and you cannot just complain

USPS stealing anything coming from abroad ..and you cannot just complain?
I ordered some art work from Belgium ,Denmark and some electronic stuff from Singapore ( that was not available locally ) . Some of the stuff from Europe and Singapore is missing - hasn't turned up. Now Country to Country mailing prices and modalities differ. Some countries have tracking available cheap others don't have anything between standard mail and registered mail and the cost difference can be pretty high. Now all items were mailed the same day. Item A worth $5 arrived , though very late. Item B worth $50 has'nt come. When I call up the USPS international parcels dept - they JUST REFUSED TO TAKE DOWN A COMPLAINT , SITING THAT THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN INITIATE A COMPLAINT IS THE SENDER FROM HIS COUNTRY NOT THE RECEIPIENT. IN OTHER WORDS WHAT USPS IS TRYING TO TELL US IS "IF THE PARCEL IS VALUABLE BUT THERE IS NO TRACKING INFO - WE WILL STEAL IT AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLAIN. " === " EVERYTHING WORTH SOME VALUE , SENT REGULAR MAIL WILL BE STOLEN " . I AM SO PISSED. DOES ANYONE HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE AND WHAT DID YOU DO ? sorry still not convinced !!! Because the same sender sends a $5 item - I get it - $50 Item - no news. Something fishy

I have had many things shipped from around the world and have never had a problem. A $50 item is not "expensive" in terms of what USPS ships processes every day. It's always the sender who has authority to file a complaint. Your situation is no different. And this would be the same with UPS & FedEx also. In my 35y of using the post office, I have had two problems: - one package was delivered to the senders address for some reason. We have never figured it out. This probably was 5y ago. - one package in 1991, never arrived and to my knowledge, never been found. My guess is the problem is the postal service in the country you shipped from (Singapore) and not the USPS.
2 :
I would say your problem is with the Customs department in the foreign countries. Since the value on the packages must be declared, and then pass through Customs, it is very likely that the Customs personnel are "confiscating" your items. Unfortunately, the best way to help insure you will receive the items is to have them mailed by Registered Mail.
3 :
Different countries have different regulations on international post. Your packages could be tied up in customs for up to a month. Just to get something from canada driven across the border took 23 days on one of my packages. Just wait it out.

RULE: Never take antibiotic without medical supervision. If your friend is not a doctor, then your friend is not doing you any favours. Some people can develop allergic reactions to antibios, and people can even die from taking them. Antibios should only be used as a last resort, they all have side effects, one of which is that they kill the friendly bacteria which we need in our gut for normal digestion.

you are fired. Belgian law doesn't address this issue.
2 :
Well regardless of the law, if they are not making enough money to afford the staff, what do you expect them to do?!?!?!?!
3 :
Do you really think they owe you work? They gave you a chance at a job and you want to call a lawyer? Did they beat you? Yell at you? Not pay you? Did they demand sex from you? Did they do anything bad to you? IF you had made more money for them than the other employees you would still have a job. Even if you were the last one hired. YOU need to not fail at your next job. Go to school.
4 :
You could continue to work there for free... Nope...your gone
5 :
Your supposed to give employees one chance, however, being on a trial period the dont need a reason to get rid of you. Read the fine print of your contract, it may say something about dismissal, ask for a copy if you dont have it. Go in the store, talk to the manager, ask for a second chance, take a reduced number of hours, whatever your can to keep your foot in the door. If not, take your experience and use it elsewhere.

play station 3?
could you please tell me if Play station 3 is identical for Europe as the USA or are there differences and if I buy in the USA for nephew will it work in Belgium

If you buy a PS3 in US, it will work on most of the TV's that are bought in the last 5 years. The thing to check is what is the output signal of PS3 in states and if the TV in Belgium supports that. In case there is a regional code on the games/movies PS3 will launch in Belgium (nobody knows that as it is not launched yet) then you may need to bring games with you for your nephew.
2 :
I don't think you will be able to take it out of the country. There are some weird regulations about exporting the advanced video games. How about buying it from a website catering to European Union and having it delivered directly to your nephew. This way you will be sure the connections work and that you are not putting yourself on the Department of Homeland Security's most wanted smuggler list.
3 :
It works , and don't worry about sending it , I have send lots of things to my Grand kids from Las Vegas ( where I live ) to Belgium . Make sure the package you send does not exceed a certain size. Check the post office for that , because if it is too large , customs in Belgium will get it and , who ever is receiving the package will have to pay ....a lot ... I know believe me .

The previous answerers forgot a small detail: your nationality. If you are not a citizen of any EU member state chances are extremely slim that you can get a job in the EU. Yes some 10 or 20 years ago the needed a lot of Turks ,Greeks and Moroccans to work in Western Europe. Which they are now trying to send back to their country of origin with a small golden parachute. Unless you are a brain surgeon and not any brain surgeon but one specialized in the left temporal lobe and you are invite by an EU sponsor your chances are almost non existent. Also dont forget the language question. In the EU almost everybody with an academic degree speaks 3 or 4 languages. If you are thinking that you can sit there and email your resumé in English you better start looking for the nearest Berlitz office.

It would have been much easier to answer your question if you would have told what you are [citizenship] instead of telling what you not are [non-EU citizen]! If you need to travel to other Schengen countries initially you will need to apply for the so called hybrid visa [type D/C] valid for "België/Belgique + Schengenstaten/Etats Schengen" which grants the stay in Belgium and the travel to other Schengen countries within the first 90 days of the visa validation. National visa type D for Belgium are usually issued to work permit holder, if required. They are in general valid for 90 days and require the visa holder to get registered at the community of residence and apply for a residence permit [verblijfstitel/titre de séjour] which also serves as visa waiver to the other Schengen countries. Type C tourist/ business visa are not the basis for an extended stay using a work permit.

I knew for sure that Belgium was indeed country code 32, but I didn't know the international dialing code for Afghanistan (not so commonly used :0)) Anyway, http://www.kropla.com/dialcode.htm shows that the Int'l dialing code is correct as 00, One thing that tends to get forgotten is that you have to drop the zero for the local code. So say your number is 016 33 22 xx, then from afghanistan you would dial 00 32 16 33 22 xx Hope this helps
2 :
The country code of Belgium is 32. The acess code (the +) is 00 If you have a telephonenumber in Belgium you must drop the 0. ex. Bruges: 050 51 33 50 (mister Smith) = 50 51 33 50 So when you call from Afghanistan to mister Smith you make 003250513350 Good luck

Right. First my background so you know where I am coming from. I was born and raised in Belgium and have now lived in England for a couple of years. So, as I don't know your background, I shall use English culture to compare Belgian culture with, though i must say that in many of the aspects you are asking about, Britain is pretty bad, so Belgium is automatically going to be better. 1. The most revered Belgian would be Father Damien. He topped the list of Greatest Belgian ever. This is a reliable poll. The complete list you can find on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Grootste_Belg . I would point you in the direction of these people in the list that are very revered, as opposed to just famous Belgians: number 1, 3, 5 and 16, the previous Belgian monarch. Read up on their lives on wikipedia too, especially Father Damien is worthwhile. (I want to keep it as short as possible here) 2. I would say Belgian has more of a greener attitude than Britain, definitely. There are always a few seats in parliament taken up by the Green party, they have even made it into the government coalition a few times. Recycling is encouraged and done by many. Most cities are very clean and attract many tourists for their medieval buildings. 3. The national religion as it were, is catholicism. Just like in all countries, the amount of devout religious people has declined since the sixties, but most people would still classify themselves as catholic if you'd ask them, even that means that they just go for marriages, baptism, funerals, first holy communions and confirmations. Especially the over-70s are still very devout catholicists, attending church regularly. There are nationally observed religious holidays apart from the Easter and Christmas related ones, such as 1 November, All Saints Day, when traditionally people remember those who have passed away. 4. Pretty much the same like other countries: some abhor it, some do it. I would say it's not as bad as England, but it's not very good in England. There is definitely less youths binge-drinking, but drugs might be more prominent than in England. I don't know, i've never been in those environments. 5. Three times a day, like other countries. I would say families do eat together much more than in England, where so many people eat separately or ready-made-meals in front of television. I think the art of cooking is still actively being passed on mother-to-daughter in Belgium. 6. Whatever the fashion. Pretty much the same as everywhere else in the world. Belgium may be small, but it ain't like Borat's version of Kazachstan. Ha. Ha. 7. A bit late. The polite late. 8. Gifts are always appropriate. A bottle of wine is never out of place. Don't buy embarrisingly expensive gifts! 9. Ah now the greetings and farewells. Three, yes, three kisses on the cheeks. I think it's left right left or whatever. Guy to guy: handshakes of course, not kisses, not like in Italy. Let them lean in first was always my approach. 10. Whatever they feel like. pff. The same like any western European country. Oh, Belgians, like the Dutch, do like a good cycling trip for recreation though. 11. You have Christmas and Easter and then there is Saint Nicholas (6 December). This is very popular among children. Saint Nicholas on the night of 5 to 6/12 brings gifts for the children that have been good. In reality of course, the gifts are put in the living room by their parents as the children sleep. I'd say this lasts upto maximum when they are 12 years of age, and they may have worked it out by then. If you want to read more about this, visit wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas. Some corners of Belgium celebrate St Martin (11 November) in stead, as he is the local patron saint. As a consequence, he (st martin or nicholas) takes the role of what Santa Clause is in America and the UK on Christmas day. Belgians do give presents on Christmas, but there is less emphasis on the Santa Clause idea, though he does "come". Easter- the usual, chocolate bunnies and eggs. 12. They are generally kept of the streets from what i have seen. Belgium seems a pretty wealthy country relatively, thinking about it. The attitude? Depends on the people. I'd say compassionate, but also prudent (if you give money to them, what are they gonna spend it on? Drink?) 13. I have been away too long to know what's currently popular on television, though the tour de France and other cycling competitions are always nationally televised and are relatively popular, to name but one difference with England, where road cycling is not popular at all. 14. However they feel like disciplining. It depends on the parents, but as in many rich countries, there is an increasing number of parents that do not want to physically strike their children and some people never say no to their children and spoil them to bits, to their own detriment. Social services are quite active as well - you need to be careful if you smack your children a

Could I follow a Master Degree in Nursing in the US

Could I follow a Master Degree in Nursing in the US?
I am a midwife in Belgium and am currently working as a qualified nurse. My husband has been offered a job for two years in the US as an ex patriot. Would it be possible for me the take a Master in Nursing even though I am a midwife? Also would it be possible to work as a nurse while taking this course?

You will first need to contact the state board of nursing where you will be living to see if you are eligible for Registered Nurse licensure. There are many regulations surrounding foreign-educated nurses and your school's program needs to be reviewed to determine if you meet all the same educational standards as a US educated RN. As for school and pursuing a master's degree, that is another issue where the school records office would need to review your transcripts to determine if you qualify for entry. So the bottom line is, nobody here can tell you much of anything, you'll need to contact the board of nursing and these universities and begin the process. Good luck to you!

Jill's answer is perfect. I did just want to add, that in the US, midwives are required to have the Master of Science in Nursing, so you could not work as a midwife in the US.

If a country falls apart, how would that work

If a country falls apart, how would that work?
My country - Belgium - has been stuck in governmental talks for months and no end in sight. There has always been tension between the French and Dutch part and it seems to be becoming less and less solveable. So say both sides want to be shot of each other but there is no actual armed conflict, would / could the country just be split in two? Does that make two new countries? How would that work internationally? As much info as possible thanks. Forget letting the people decide, government has railroaded round every decision the people have made these last twenty years.

It's pretty unlikely for a country to peacefully split into two parts. In most cases, there will be resources in the other 'new' countries region that both 'new' countries will want, and neither will want to give up. Then the killing starts.
2 :
Put it to a nation wide VOTE.....let the people decide.
3 :
It can happen. An example to read up on is the former Yugoslavia which has now become Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia. This was not peaceful by any means but it is a precendent. You can declare a new country, the process would then be to become "recognised" by the international community by gaining their support, which is not necessarily easy. This is not like a law or anything but unless you have the support of the international community it could be difficult to trade with other countries which is vital in todays world. In the case of Yugoslavia the international community was involved in the breakup and rebuilding of the country so the recognitions were much easier to come by. But as i said, recognition is not really an official process to which there are rules. Perhaps a formal aspect would be acceptance into the United Nations (UN) but this is more of a government recognition rather than a nation. The main problem would come from getting internal agreement to the change What makes this whole topic difficult to explain in a forum like this though are the many many issues involved in seperating a country which almost invariably leads to conflict. For instance how would you divide belgium geographically? invariably though a general divide might exist the population will in some way be mixed up, this means you would have to clear the dutch people out of the French sections, probably against many peoples will. This is called "ethnic cleansing" which is a crime in international law. This is exactly what happened in yugoslavia which is why it was such a terrible, terrible mess leading to one of the genocides of the 20th century. And we have even started talking about resource allocation yet, most wars are fought over who gets control of natural resources - Think iraq and the kuwait region. Kuwait has most of the oil and wanted to break away and form its own country with the result that Saddam Hussein gassed thousands of villagers because he was so desperate to maintain control of the the richest parts of the country. Currently think Israel and palestine where no one can agree how a palestinian state would work. Country seperation is theoretically possible if both sides simply agreed to do it (and by that i mean ALL the people of the current nation). And if this was done i can't see the international community being too adverse to it. But in reality the road is fraught with a thousand difficulties- its never going to be simple you can rest assured...
4 :
well in the oldendays conflics like this would be settled by civil war. but as youre discussing belgium here. i would say that is very very unlikely. usually when the civil war ends, a peace is signed and borders are drawn. In most cases however, in more modern history, the UN interveins in civil wars. to protect the peace. (think of yugoslavia.) the countries wouldnt realy become countries unless a government is established. and this government is backed. this could either be by a military pressence large enough to defend the country, or by a government that is backed internationally, either by the un or a powerful neighbouring state. but since europe has been a very stable region over the last 50 years, this is very unlikely. Stately reforms have been in discussion since the forming of belgium. and mostly this is towards some autonomy or 2 headed state. the negotiations always strand on deciding who takes brussels, which is bi-lingual. as is, it does not realy matter. belgium is already in the european union, and splitting the country isnt realy an option. what would that mean to the european ideal of setting aside out differences? when the country that houses the capitol of the union, splits in two?
5 :
If Belgium was to split in 2 then there wouldn't be an open war, but the economic, social and culture effects would cause more damage then war. Social security, medical care, etc. All this would be destroyed and these systems are amongst the best, if not the best in the world. The whole Belgian system has been constructed by the wallons and the Flemish in 150y and everything would be gone in a matter of months. That's why none of the Belgian politicians will ever allow that Belgium be split in half. Except maybe Dewinter but I hate that freak of nature. Belgium has been the example of a country that can work politically, even with 3 language communities, cause some forget that the German community also has a say in this, even though they have to vote for Wallon parties. The 3 have always learned that they need each other, When the Wallons were the most powerfull 100y ago they knew that without the Flemish they were nothing. Now the Flemish have to see that without the Wallons they are nothing. When the mines and factories closed in Wallonia, the whole central of power shifted to Flanders. (The German part isn't that important in the history of belgium cause it was given to them after the second world war. They came smack in the middle of the change of power.) Now Flanders still is the richest, most developed, and attractive part of Belgium but without the Wallons they have nothing. The social and cultural system doesn't allow them to be split, if they do they could end up destroying everything they built. And if they really want to split they will take their time and try to find a sollution that doesn't affect their social system. So don't fear a separation just yet. Only when they feel ready and have a safe way of going their separate way, then they'll do so. Vive la republic. Hehe, always fun to say that.

I'm hoping that the reason why your parents don't want you to move to London is because they love you and that will take their beloved daughter a long ways away. No, I don't expect you to understand the reasoning, because you are not a parent. I have found that the older that I get the more I wish I could have my children around me. No, I don't want them to live in my home with me, but I want them within couple hundred miles of my place so that we can visit often.

you can have this result by doing a right-click on the cell, choose format cell, click alignment and check wrap text. just be sure that the width of the column will be enoudh to make the country and the numbers after it to go down. This is just a temporary solution.

Try Alt+Enter, plus format the cell for wrapping.

Going away for work? Burden or Pleasure

Going away for work? Burden or Pleasure?
I have got to go to belgium next week for a work conference. Some people think it's glamorous for work to pay for trips away. I will enjoy it when I get there I am sure but I actually feel it's kinda lonely as I won't know anyone, I am in another country in a hotel room and know I sound like a saddo but I'll miss my hubby like crazy. Ah ark at me - lol would any of you like to do traveling with your company?

Travelling with the company would be nice in some ways. But again, you would be alone or possibly with a coworker. Seeing places alone isn't as fun as seeing it with someone you care about but being able to see them is better than not seeing them at all.

I think it would be fun. Absence makes the heart grow founder.
