nope u can live here in europe but i dnt think they will give you a working permit unless your bf has his own business and he will give you a job .....

I only know the rules for the Netherlands and not Belgium and although they should be similar there are still differences between immigration policies of countries within the EU, but I could be wrong so it is best to check officially. The added instance in your case is that you are already resident in Belgium and not applying from your native country. Your Hungarian partner has the same+ rights (under EU law) as a Belgian national and hence if you are married (or in the Netherlands 'samenwonen" (registered living together officially) then you are able to obtain a residencial permit to live and work under "family re-unification" .He will have to provide profile that he can cover your expenses (as the state understandbly will not cover you for benefits bringing over a foreign national) so have to have proof of an address, financial capability, etc In the Netherlands, similar to Belgium, gay marriage is permitted under law and partners receive the same rights as same-sex marriages. If I were you, I would check it officially with the immigration department for your specific case (the link is in English as I wasn't sure if you read Dutch/French) http://www.diplomatie.be/en/travel/visa/visumNodig.asp I did try to check, but there is no option for a foreign national already resident in Belgium. There is a contact form on the site.
3 :
Why don't you check this out at "hotel de ville"or "maison communale". They are competent in answering all your questions. You will eventually have to go there to post the bans anyway. In some cases you can even take on your partners nationality. Each case is different as it depends on the nationality of the people involved. For getting a work permit it is, I guess, the same procedure. So, I would suggest you go to the source (see above) or, eventually, to the Ministère du Travail, Ministère des Affaires Etrangères or your own embassy> Good luck to you.

you can apply for job there through internet with the help of some job portal like naukri.com etc....and then apply for visa...u can easily get the visa processed if once u get job offer from there....
2 :
You did not say where you live. For a number of countries like Japan, it's not hard, If you live in the Philippines, it's a bit harder (I know because I live in the PI). Depending on your education and specialty, you might find it easy, especially if you work for the government in foreign affairs. For a common job, you'd better go to one of the labor contractors in your country.
3 :
At the risk of disappointing you I would like to paint the REAL picture. At this moment in time it is extremely difficult to get a work permit in the European Union for nationals who are not citizens from one of the member states. The police strictly controls any workplace and illegals are immediately deported and the employer who gave them work is fined high amounts. At this moment from your country there are a lot of young girls who come in (or are brought in by shady characters) on tourist visa (valid 3 to 6 months) and who are promised work as nannies and babysitters. However the reality can be quite different. So I really do not see many possibilities for you unless you would have a very very specialized carreer.
4 :
Sorry forget it for a job here.

Question for belgians

Question for belgians?
In the near future,I will have the chance to go and work in Belgium,in some town. Are the living conditions good there? Can many people speak english, like in Holland? Is public transportation simple and accessable, for me to just go to Rotterdam every second weekend, for example? Do people discriminate or look down on foreign workers,or are they nice? The living conditions are pretty high. But the prizes too. For example: when you want to rent a house in a small town somewhere, it's fast 500 euros a month. Belgium is actually famous for the high level of languages students get at school. (But don't take me as an example of the contrary since I only had one year of English; still in school, you know ^^ ) But normally people in your environment should be able to speak English. In Flanders more people will be able to speak proper English than in the French speaking part of Belgium though. About public transportation: we have trains, trams, buses. No problem with that. We're situated in the middle of Europe, so you can be in Paris in a few hours, in London in less than 2 hours and in Rotterdam or Amsterdam even quicker. About your last question; normally people are nice. Also to foreign workers. But in some areas of a big city, there is a minority of people who don't like to see people of "certain" countries coming... It's a delicate situation. I hope you get what I mean: Belgium has a lot of refugees asking for asylum. And some people don't like to see 'them' coming. But I think you're a native English speaker, so no worries. I hope I helped. x
2 :
Julie has given an excellent info capsule but for more info it would help if you would specify if "some town" means Putte Kapelle or that you plan to live in the Avenue P.H. Spaak in Brussel. Discrimination: not against expats, certainly against immigrants from arab origin and asylum seekers, illegal immigrants "sans papiers" etc.

Which airport should I choose as via hub to LA

Which airport should I choose as via hub to LA?
I work in Brussels, Belgium. This summer I plan to fly to L.A.. There is not direct flight from Brussels to L.A., I must have one stop in Europe or in US continent to arrive in L.A.. I do not want to have my first stop in Europe, I would like to stop over in the US continent. I found out there are several US airports I could choose as my interval stop to L.A.. Those airports are Chicago (ORD), Atlanta (ATL), Philadelphia (PHL), New York (Newark), Minneapolis and Washington D.C. According to the passengers data provided by the World Aviation authority, it seems to me that the busiest airport is Atlanta, then followed by Chicago, Minneapolis, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. In order to have a smooth travel and happy transfer, could some one tell me which airport should I choose for my first stop in states? Thanks a lot.

I have flown from London and Amsterdam to the US and changed planes in Minneapolis (this is with Northwest Airlines). Never had any problems, and MSP is a nice airport with good facilities and layout. Customs people were really nice there too and no long queues, and baggage transfer was really easy. Minneapolis is also a great city for a short visit if you wanted to stay a few days before going on to LA. Only problem is a rare one: in the summer time the Great Plains region (including Minneapolis) can get very big violent thunderstorms which can close airports and cause delays. Happened to me once at MSP at the end of June, but it's not that frequent: i think i was just unlucky.
2 :
Chicago is probably the worst airport to connect at since they over-schedule the number of take-offs and landings they can handle. Flying into the New York area is also pretty bad since that region has the most number of aircraft flying there at a given time. I think flying into Minneapolis or Washington D.C. would be your best bet. Of course you cannot really factor in if on the day you fly how the weather will be. If there are thunderstorms around the area, any airport will be delayed. Just make sure you have enough time between connections. I know United Airlines has a hub in Washington D.C. and a hub in Los Angeles. Therefore they will have quite a few flights between those 2 cities.
3 :
I think you have out of date information. Scheduled nonstop flights between Brussels and the USA for summer 2007 -- Chicago O'Hare airport (on SN Brussels Airlines, operated by codeshare partner American Airlines), Detroit (Northwest Airlines), New York's JFK Airport (American/SN Brussels, Delta), Washington DC's Dulles Airport (United Airlines), Newark (Continental Airlines), Atlanta (Delta), and Philadelphia (USAirways). There is no nonstop service scheduled between Brussels and Minneapolis. Among these, I would choose New York. What a great place for a stopover! Also, there are a lot of nonstop flight options to LA area airports from New York's JFK and Newark airports, on good airlines like JetBlue.
4 :
Please keep in mind that the US Customs and Immigration Service requires you to clear immigration and customs at your first point of entry in the United States. Unless you plan on staying over in whatever city you choose to fly into, you could spend most of your layover in long lines. You will first have to clear immigration, collect your luggage, clear customs, then check-in your bags and then clear security before connecting to your flight to LA, you may have to endure long lines and waits in any of the above procedures. I personally think it would be much easier to connect in Europe and have your luggage forwarded on to LA from Brussels. If you MUST stopover somewhere in the US, leave yourself plenty of time between flights. Good luck.

Assuming you are on a dependent's visa and your husband's visa is a temporary work permit -- correct? 1. What are your qualifications & experience in HR and where was your experience? India? Worthless in Europe and N. America. You need an MBA (or equivalent) from a Euro or N. Amer. university, you need to know labor law in the country where you want to work, etc. 2. You're in an EU country, and EU citizens get preference for any jobs. If there were an opening for which you qualified, you still go at the bottom of the list, after every EU citizen. 3. The economic downturn has already hit UK and is starting to hit the Eurozone, too. Many companies are not hiring foreigners on work visas, or not renewing existing permits, or terminating them altogether. How much longer is your husband's temporary permit? How secure is the balance of the term of his visa? Is there a chance his visa will be terminated? If so, you -- as a dependent -- go too. Employers will not want to hire you when you might not be able to stay long enough to make it worthwhile to hire you. 4. Employers have to obtain work permits, you cannot. When applying for jobs, you must inform them that you are on a temporary dependent's pass and that they would have to sponsor your work permit. Not to reveal this is fraud and gets you deported and banned, with or without your husband. 5. India is still booming and there are lots of jobs in HR in India if you have Indian credentials. Your job prospects are much better there than they are anywhere in Eurozone or N. Amer.

Finding a job may not be your biggest problem, it is more the case of getting a job that would allow you to obtain the work permit needed to work legally in the country. At least for the Netherlands (and most countries in the EU), an American cannot work without a residence permit. A residence permit for a person who moves here to live and work, is conditional on a work permit being granted. This has to be applied for by the employer (and is only applicable for that company/contract and non-transferable) and unless it can be proven that the position can only be fulfilled by that person ahead of any other candidate in the total pool of labour in the EU, then it will not be granted. You can read all the details here including links to job sites in the Netherlands http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiBJ5aO4gN9OPA7GK8Xwpzjty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081029005645AAYhd63 Your best bet would be to get a job in the US for a company which has branch offices in the Netherlands, for which you could eventually be transferred on the basis of specific knowledge/experience built up working for that company.

Where in Brussels Belgium is the best place to live

Where in Brussels Belgium is the best place to live?
Hi! We are travelling to Brussels this year to live there. Where is the best place to live for a couple with a little baby, if we were to work at the airport? Central Brussels, Overijse, Tervuren, Waterloo........? Are there places we should avoid due to crime etc....?

Well, all depends on what you have and want to spend for rent. If you have an unlimited budget try : Genval, Waterloo, Tervuren, Overijssche. All posh places for yupies with an unlimited budget. Rents are skyrocketing there. And all are places at the SOUTHside of Brussels meaning you have to commute about an hour to the airport. And all are in pinewood surroundings which in winter make for particulary icy roads. Places to avoid: yes definitely there are some places to avoid; but any real estate agent worth his salt would not even dream of showing them to you. You would not ask a Manhattan real estate agent to show you a duplex in Harlem or the Bronx would you? Why dont you try Diegem (lots of Nato people live there, middle to higer middle class) and it is about 5 minutes from the airport. Lots of corporate offices are located there too: Exxon Inc. for example. Welcome to Belgium.
2 :
It depends on what you want, I lived in Krainem, (quite near Teruven )that wasn't too bad commuting, it is a suburb and quite posh, if you want city life (also lovely) Park Cinquantire is lovely, and not as expensive as the suburbs.. which has a dual carriage way straight into the ring road.. so North East Brussels.. Brussels is fantastic.. enjoy your time there.. I am jealous!! (scharbeck isn't so good..I would keep away!!) (please excuse the spellings.. I haven't lived there for a few years!! x
3 :
stay away from schaarbeek, and anderlecht. Uccle is one of those super yuppy places but its in the south, I was born there, and my family is from waterloo(and asebroek in the "far" west). There is an american school in waterloo-braine l'alleud so there are a lot fo americans there. Unfortunately Zaventem is in the north. You coudl try hoegarden, or woluwe st. pieters/ pierre. if you move to the suburbs its best that you live in the flemish brabant, they are richer and respond well to foreigners that aren't muslim (same mentality in the south but they aren't rich). everybody gave you a list of several communities, but the reality of it is that brussels is made up of 19 of them, and there are tons of towns around it so this is actually a relatively small pool of names. good luck (bring a rain coat)
4 :
It depends on what you like : downtown or suburbs, or even the countryside ? And of course it depends on your budget. If you prefer downtown, then be aware that there is a good train connection to the airport (every 20 minutes, and takes 15 minutes). Else, Evere in Brussels suburbs, or Diegem or Kraainem or Overijse, as already mentionned. Some people say Schaerbeek is not good, but there are fine places in Schaerbeek as well. Tervueren, Genval, La Hulpe are very nice areas with a lot of trees, there you need a car. Waterloo is nice, with a big English speaking community, but the traffic to the airport and back from the airport in the evening will drain your energy... Belgium is small, so you may even consider living near Leuven.

Either he has a form of ID that he didn't disclose to you or he's been smuggled into the country & will be smuggled out again if he has no ID - national identity papers for Belgium or another EU member state, driver's licence, an internationally recognised form of student ID, a British identity card or passport - then he won't be worried about what immigration thinks because he's clearly not using legal means to travel

I presume you hold an Egyptian passport, in which case you'll need to apply for a visa toBelgium. If your trip is less than 90 days and for touristic purposes then it is a relatively straightforward process. Who you know in Belgium is irrelevant, but you will need an address of where you'll be staying, in which case you could provide your friend's address, if you have no hotel booked yet. To apply for your visa, you must contact the relevant Belgian embassy or consulate in person. Usually an appointment is necessary - and these can take several weeks to obtain. You can apply through the Belgian embassy in the UAE, address here: http://www.diplomatie.be/en/addresses/abroad/abroaddetail.asp?PAYS_E=UNITED%20ARAB%20EMIRATES Here is a list of documents you'll need to apply for your visa: http://www.diplomatie.be/en/travel/visa/visumFiche.asp

The security code is a 3 digit number on Visa & Master Card and a 4 digit number on American Express. The code is usually on the back on Visa/MC and on the front on AMEX. If you still have problems then call the phone number on the back of the card for customer service assistance.

How come liberal attitudes don't work

How come liberal attitudes don't work?
In countries like France, Belgium and The Netherlands there are very liberal attitudes to sex such as condoms given out to teenagers, sex education from early age, public sex/nudity legal etc. These countries have a very low % of teenage pregnancies. But home come when these liberal ideas came to the USA and the UK the teenage pregnancy rate went up?
Other - Society & Culture - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
These liberal ideas haven't come to the US. Since Bush has been in office he pushed for abstinence education. My friend was fired for even mentioning what a condom is, when he was helping teach "sex ed." We are not nearly as liberal as those countries are. We have plenty of misconstrued sexual appeal and images in our media, but we are unfortunately conservative in our true sex education to kids. Therefore, pregnancy rates have gone up.
2 :
France, Belgium and The Netherlands have better television than the US and the UK.
3 :
I wonder the same thing. Well I live in the US but I feel that they shouldn't just teach abstinence to children because apparently it doesn't work. It seems to me that people are afraid to tell their kids about sex, maybe they feel if they teach them about safe sex their saying it's okay to have sex ( which isn't true ). I'm pregnant with my first child and I know I'm going to tell my child all about sex, std's and birth control. I want my child to get the right information and from the right person not from a friend who is the same age.
4 :
well France, the Netherlands and Belgium, along with some other country's in Europe, primarily the European Union, and some smaller country's in South America..Face Declining populations, due to more so liberal ideas..This isn't always bad, but a declining population is bad in many aspects..Women are wanting more jobs, and to pursue a career, as it is France, is very dense, so not many family'sare having lots of kids, Most people live in Apartments, and in the city, were its more crowded, and..Abortion is aloud whenever basically so you see many people getting abortions and a little less birth rates....THis leads to a declining population.. Not Only that but lets see, as opposed to military expansion as Some EU country's are this provides reassurance that they will not become a superpower.. the European Union, Will Never Become a superpower, because they have a principled aversion to war, that stems from their belief, that It is politically irrational, morally, unacceptable element, of statecraft, and should only be used, to stave off an invasion.. From a study i read, of th 71% of Europeans in the EU, that supported the EU, becoming a superpower, only 36% said they would support this if it meant, increasing military budgets..Nobody can hold power, if they do not at least posse the ability to make a credible threat of deterrence by having their resources, more useful, than military, force, eventually you come to a place where someone challenges you with force back, and if you are not able to adequately meet that challenge with force back, than you are doomed, indeed all empires fall because they could not adequately meet force back..or because of rapid expansion and inflation or A civil war.. So Liberal ideas, do not always account for the best know do they, of course it all depends on how you want your lifestyle, world, country or were you inhabit to be,,in this case the voters of france, do not want to become a superpower, nor do they want to become more capitalist, like the US economy... AND its funny because while many Europeans resent americas, Presence in their region, their government continue to request, americas Presence to offer more deals, and some smaller european country's such as Lithuania want more protection from old Russia, which may in the future want another USSR, by the way i am not a nerd, i love to F#cking get drunk and Screw girls i just happen to no allot about world affairs i do feel However, We need to become more liberal in some few aspects like The WAR ON DRUGS IS A FAILURE and Topless Sun Bathing should be allowed its A free choice, which dose not affect anyone or even a small child like abortion does in some other ways.. also Sex Education is good and they already bascially teach sex Education in Health Class, which is a requirment for High School, at least it is in my city... and People will have sex if they want, education or not they will..some argue giving education will teach them how good it feels and make them more curious, that it does, so many more kids might be having sex, but having sex, safely as compared to not Knowing and getting Std's and Pregnancies, I assure though probally more teenagers have sex in France or the Netherlands than the United States or many asian countrys and middle eastern countrys..Because America and many parts of eastern europe and middle east, are more reliogous and teach Like all religons sex Before marriage is a big sin... the only thing is more people in the netherlands and such are more educated but i bet their rate for teens having sex are much higher, with more knowledge they dont get stds and preganices as much, which is good..but to extremley religous people who do not want teens having sex, its best, to have poor education and to be scarred from sex, because you see some of your peers, have unwanted pregnanices and std's this works in the sense that is scarres many kids off from sex.. as compared to a more liberal country such as france, or the netherlands..

Sounds good to me. I think you should give it a try. Just don't over fill the waffle iron. I think the 2 perfect "fillings" would be ice cream and Nutella Either together or separately. Fresh fruit would also be good. This time of year you could use a spice cake mix and apple filling or a pumpkin filling. Pumpkin Butter or Apple Butter would taste great.

That sounds absolutely AMAZING!! I like the way you think! Please update this with your results!! :)

Hmm, interesting I had never thought of that. Give it a try, but I would use one of the inexpensive Jiffy cake mixes to begin with and then, if it works, the combinations would be endless. Be sure to make sure to spray non stick spray on the iron though.

Except for the employees who benefit from the deviation provided for in art. 9 of the Royal Decree of 09/06/1999, the granting of an employment permit and of a work permit type B is restricted to the countries that are bound to Belgium through international treaties or conventions on the occupation of employees. The countries referred to in art. 10 of the Royal Decree are: Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Morocco, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and the 10 new member states of the European Union (Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Rumania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic). A governmental site says. So I can not apply for a work permit visa :( Except for the employees who benefit from the deviation provided for in art. 9 of the Royal Decree of 09/06/1999, the granting of an employment permit and of a work permit type B is restricted to the countries that are bound to Belgium through international treaties or conventions on the occupation of employees. there's no need to change your religion migrating to Europe!! apply for a working permit first, Before going there. it would help if you already had a job offer there (may throu relatives) i'm sure they have plenty of information on the Belgian government websites good luck!!
2 :
These are the immigration laws for Belgium: http://pubweb.fdbl.com/ihp8/global/media85.nsf/public-country-briefs/belgium?opendocument You do not have to change your religion. There are many Muslims in Belgium. However finding work would be very difficult , especially at the moment when there are so many unemployed people. You would have to apply from your country and be sponsored by a Belgian employer who would have to justify employing you because you have special skills which people already in Belgium cannot offer. In your case it might be justified as an opening to enable the firm to trade with Iran, but finding such a firm is not very likely at the moment. PS. If you did find a firm wishing to export to Iran (perhaps with the help of your relatives who live in Brussels), your logistic and commercial experience and your knowledge of Iranian customs and language might allow you to get a permit B. Work Permit B: Work Permit B requires employer sponsorship and the sponsoring employer must file the application. Work Permit B is valid only for employment with the sponsoring employer in the job indicated in the application and is valid for 12 months with annual renewals possible. Normally, Work Permit B is issued only when there is a shortage of Belgian workers for the sector or specialization concerned, unless the foreign national is highly skilled or has management functions. Changing your religion would make no difference. Belgium is a secular state like Turkey and people's religion is not taken into account when they apply for a job or a visa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Belgium
3 :
Changing religion has nothing to do with legal immigration. It's all about seeking asylum in western or more developed states. Frankly speaking your specifications are not meeting the requirements of a legal work permit. The only thing that remains is... Sorry I am not giving you illegal advices, however you know what I mean if u are wise! I wish u luck baby! :-)

How does it work with bank holidays that fall on the weekends in Belgium

How does it work with bank holidays that fall on the weekends in Belgium?
I joined the company in June. There's 2 bank holidays that fall on the weekend (15th of August & 1st of November). The company recuperated those days in january and May respectively. I was told now, that because I joined the company in June, those two days are lost and I can't take them off at some other time. Is this correct? It just doesn't seem fair that I have to work two days more than everybody else and still get the same kind of payment. I don't really care that others had that day off in January, when I wasn't here. I would think that I have a right to have this day off as well, just at some other time (choosen either by me or the company). Well... I think you should fight for your rights. If they'll walk over me now, they'll keep on walking.

Ok, so it may not to fair, but I'd say don't push the issue. You're new at the company and you don't want to make a bad impression. You may come off badly if you try to push this issue so soon after you arrived. One day doesn't matter so much in the long run.
2 :
If you wanna fight for your rights in Belgium make sure you got the money and know the right people as there is still an awfull lot of friends politics and if you ain't one of the crowd you will get nowhere most likely ... Alternatively you could join the Union. Then you will have to decide wether to join the Socialist Union (ABVV), the Catholic Union (ACV) or the liberal Union (ACLVB). Unless you have the statue of 'bediende' and then you can join the BBTK too. Welcome to Belgium :-)
3 :
Actually both dates are Legal Holidays in Belgium. If a legal holiday is on a weekday you get free, if these days happen to be during the WE (and you normally dont work in the WE) nothing changes for you. In banking companies (or another - financial - companies that follow the CAO of the banking industry) there are an extra 4 bankholidays. Every year the unions consider when these are taken. For 2009 2 of them are fixed and are considered as replacement of the 2 dates you mentioned. The other 2 are free to choose. You get the holidays on the fixed dates if you have a contract in that period. So in your case it is a disavantage. Someone who had a contract till now but quit, had these 2 days off for free :-) Don't hestitate do ask the human resource team if this is correct. But they have to follow the rules, this is well organised in Belgium (at least something is well organised here). If you dont agree or if you are not sure, ask the union. But I dont know if they answers questions of people who are not a member, but you can try. Another option is contact the social agency or accountant that calculates the wages for your company. If the company is not correct in this let them know about it. But you need some documentation to prove they are not correct. But dont forget we dont have these fight-culture over here. Asking and talking is no problem but it is not appreciated you are too assertive. If you wanna talk about this or need more help, just send me a message.

Does anyone know of a business in Belgium that is on the net?
I received an email reguarding this business that is cargo and transportation. They are looking for people to allow wire transfers into their accts and then western union the money to other people, clients. Does anyone know if this is legit, or a scam? I am a stay home mom trying to find work from home. This would be ideal, but I don't want to get burned or into something illegal. Thanks for your help.

I've received these too. These companies are paying Monster or other internet resume sites to "filter" resumes. They're not really looking closely at your resume, it just met the criteria they typed in. With all the new scrutiny being given to banking transactions, I would not consider any "foreign" based company that wants to pay you to process money. If you decide to pursue this, definitely check with several U.S. federal agencies to see if these are legitimate jobs - or just money laundering schemes. Good luck...

Can I enroll my kids in public school in Belgium

Can I enroll my kids in public school in Belgium?
I am considering going to Brussels for a few months to assist a friend who lives there. I have two school age children. Would I be able to enroll them in school for the time we are there. I would also keep them up on their school work from their American school, but would like them to experience school in Belgium. They know some French and are in kindergarten and first grade so could pick up language quickly. Thoughts, advice, pros, cons - all welcome.

Normally i think it is possible.. Now u have to see in the kindergarden u have chosen and ask there.
2 :
As Brussels has a lot of expatriats (European Union -- Nato ---Multinationals) there are some American Schools there. One of the better ones is the American School in Tervueren (10 km. from Brussels center). Sorry I dont have the data but i'm sure if you go to google and type American School you will come up with the answer. For your info: there is also an American "Newcomers Club" which is very helpful to recently arrived americans; the ladies get together and the embassy regularly organizes events: 4th of July, Thanksgiving etc. Good luck; you'll like the chocolates and the waffles. PS if you want your kids to use this opportunity to pick up a foreign language may I suggest you send them to a French speaking school (with all respect French is more widespread in the world than Flemish). They will be received with open arms as the Belgian schools receive subsidies from the government, based on the number of students. Apart from this, at their age they will pick up the language in no time.
3 :
Of course you can! The only thing you should do is send an email to the principle of the school you want to send your children to, to ask if it's alright with him. Because obviously it means extra work for the teachers and enrolling your children for just a couple of months isn't evident. Good schools often have long waiting list. You should contact a school asap. There's a lot of immigrants in Brussels, so there are a lot of french and dutch speaking schools with children who don't speak much french. Brussels has many fine schools. Belgium is general is known for it's excellent education. I think it's a good idea to enroll them in a french speaking school. The sooner they pick up a new language the better. Research shows that bilingual people perform better at other subjects and tests too. And they're less likely to have memory problems when they get older.
4 :
With all respect to the people that answered, you have to be careful with bureaucracy in Belgium. A public school is governed by the state. It's possible yes, but things here can take time to happen. As a new Belgian citizen, I know that getting the right papers can take months. They also change the rules quite a bit without notice. The best idea is to have your friend contact a few schools of your choice, and ask the principal (or director) what to do. In addition, call the Belgian embassy in your country and ask as well. On a more positive note, the Belgian civil servents are incrediably professional and helpful. They are interested in helping people. As a side note, my wife (she's Belgian) told me that she had two Americans going to classes at her high school. So it can happen.

As far as I am aware, there are no English speaking radio stations in Belgium itself. However, if you were to go on the AM band, you can pick up one or two BBC stations from the UK.
2 :
No, there is no english speaking radio station in belgium. But, it is easy to capture the BBC.
3 :
None that are based in Belgium, but if you get Telenet Digital TV, you'll get a few European stations such as BBC 1 to 3. There was a time, years ago, that you could recieve an American station through FM bandwidth, but that station has long since disappeared from local aerials. Also the Antwerp Central Station has "hotspots" where an international news station is broadcast, in English. Whether this is locally based or not, I don't know. I'll have to warn you, to work in Belgium you will need to have Dutch basics. Or French, depending on which part of the country you are planning to go to. Or, alternatively, you could apply for a job in the Irish-themed bars, of which there are plenty. They generally don't mind if you only talk English. And often don't mind if you're not Irish.
4 :
No, only dutch and french
5 :
You can probably pick up a military radio station like Voice of America with a good enough radio. There are military bases all over Germany. I remember picking up BBC back in the 80s. "It's 6 o'clock in Central Europe..."

Want to work for the Russian state or in relation to it

Want to work for the Russian state or in relation to it?
I have long been a big fan of Russia (I'm not a national though, I'm from Belgium). I have studied law and would like a job that is directly related to Russia (eg something in an embassy) either from Belgium or, although maybe not as much likely, based in Russia. I'm thinking of studying for an extra degree in international relations, although I'm not quite sure on that. Do you have tips for me?

Belgium's government works without politicians running it. Why can't most stable governments - like yours?
There is no crisis in Belgium... Yet the politicians said "crisis!" when it was left without one almost a year ago - leaving me thinking it was more a cry for "job security" than anything else. Do we really NEED politicians to lead a government if there is sufficient stability within borders and adequate administration of external affairs? Just how much do we need politicians to lead an administration if 99.9% is already taken care of by administrative controls or can be dealt with without political interference?

Simple answer. Who has the biggest population and government? What does Belgium have?
2 :
Politicians ARE running government, yesterday I attended a meeting of the Federal Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs, which proves that the previous government is doing a caretaker's job. The paradox with Leterme II is that it began to work after it fell... All the government institutions are still functioning perfectly, including parliament. And people also forget the Belgium is a federation and that the regional governments are still up and running. It has nothing to do with size or population, like some idiots tend to say.
3 :
Your question should be what is the point in elections in a country like Belgium? The people voted and yet a year later they still ain't seeing those they voted for in power. Would you really like that level of apathy in your country? Wanna have a feel of what life in Belgium is really like? This blog might be an eyeopener... here's a taster: 'High marks for inefficiency Belgium is one of the most expensive countries to live in and has the lowest return on investment in terms of quality of life when comparing government spending and the Human Development Index ranking, according to an OECD review. Of the OECD’s 30 member countries, Belgium ranks third most inefficient ahead of Italy and Hungary, but behind Greece.' http://onlyinbelgium.eu/page/3

Could this Belgian compromise on gay marriage work in for the US

Could this Belgian compromise on gay marriage work in for the US?
Gay marriage is legal here in Belgium for those that want it but those people who are against it are totally free not to have one. No government agency rounds up unwilling heterosexuals and religious folks to force them to have a gay marriage The Dutch did the same thing. We call it live and let live. Could this compromise work in the States? Should the positive experiences in other countries with legal gay marriage be considered in the American debate?
Politics - 17 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I'm totally down with that. And Kurt, in my religion you go to hell if you can't use homonyms. To each their own.
2 :
here in america the states decide about gay marriage and put the issue to a vote. we call that democracy.
3 :
No and that's not a compromise, anyway. Don't be silly about this. The US was never Belgium and if the people who settled the US wanted to do what the Dutch did, they could have stayed in Holland and we wouldn't even be here today. But we have 50 states and under our US Constitution, matters not delegated to the other powers belong to the states. Marriage licensing is one of the things designated to the states. Letting states decide is called a compromise.
4 :
I think it could. The bottom line is, does anybody out there really care what two strangers do with their lives?
5 :
Just because other countries compromise on "gay marriage," doesn't mean it's right. Marriage is between a man and a woman. We should not let gays control and engineer entire societies just because of who they choose to sleep with.
6 :
Well, uh, yeah, that's the idea behind allowing same-sex couples to marry. If you're against it, don't have one. Even in this day and age, there are people against interracial marriages, but they don't hold sway, and those marriages are no less valid than marriages between two people of the same race.
7 :
I think that's the only way it would work, but then you would be denying millions of citizens their paranoid delusions about gay marriage. Should positive experiences from other countries be considered in the American debate? Haha. Has that ever happened in any other "debate" in America? In fact, I'd argue that the better something works in other countries, the less likely we are to adopt it here.
8 :
By that reasoning murder should be legal for those who want to murder but if you are against it you are free not to do it. So NO that is not a compromise--that is a complete cave in--Wrong is wrong--right is Right and never shall the two mix and be called a compromise.
9 :
While it is true we have democracy and the rule of the majority in this country, the fact is that the founding fathers were very concerned about the majority becoming repressive. They took many steps to try to protect the minorities. IMHO, we should make a distinction between civil union (legal) and marriage (religious). The government should allow civil unions between ANY two consenting adults. All legal rights should apply to all couples joined in civil union. Let the religions perform marriages any way they want, but those marriages have no impact on the legal standing of the couple. VWVW20 - murder is not between two consenting adults so your analogy is false.
10 :
The problem is that there are specific and special benefits that are provided to married people by law. We either continue to give them those special benefits or give no benefits to anyone. If we recognize gay marriage as legitimate, then no one should get any benefit.
11 :
Absolutely, yes. The position that you describe is consistent with the principles of liberty that I most value.
12 :
In theory? Of course it could work. Unfortunately.. there are just too many people here that want to dictate other people's lives instead of focusing on their own. Pity too... some of us can actually deal with living peacefully with our neighbors.
13 :
The first answer is exactly why I hate religious hypocrites
14 :
The problem is that the Christian Right in America is so full of closet Homosexuals like the preacher Ted Haggard and the Republican senator Larry Craig, and Republican congressman Foley, they are worried about losing half their members once gay people have equal rights. They will never go for it!
15 :
I don't think so, and this is why: Most Americans are bigots of some kind of another when it comes to religious issues. Many conservatives see this as a religious issue, not a civil right issue.
16 :
You may wish to look up the definition of the word 'compromise.'
17 :
Its doubtful.

I have traveled a few times to europe and i really dislike the modern attitude and state of affairs in the U.S and i would love to be able to move to europe. Now obviously i would need work and im totaly at a loss as how i would go about finding good, steady work overseas so i could move over there. there are tons of sights on the net for jobs overseas. check them out.
2 :
For one thing you might not like it when you are living there because some have a way of making Americans feel really uneasy and unwelcome. If you want to move there, I would look into some jobs on the American bases in Europe. You don't have to be military.. you take on a government job. Plus you have the advantage of having other Americans around if you ever face too much anti-American attitude.
3 :
Try looking online...be sure to have a really good visa. In Germany the situation isnt that good, local people dont have jobs. If you could get a working visa that would be great. Uk is looking for a lot of buisness ..at least for what I need these are just things drawn from what i've heard. With Sweden you need a good job I think. Why dont you try looking at their national internet sites.
4 :
First of all, don't be afraid of American bashing, in the end, they copy or listen to our music, eat at McDonald's, and watch our films and TV shows. And don't say "I'm from America, sorry." I'm not at all a flag waver, but don't be afraid of who you are. The most assured job in Europe for an American is teaching English. If you get a CELTA certification before or after you go, you will definately get work (cost about 1,500 USD). Without CELTA, work in the West might be hard to get. In the newer EU members, CELTA isn't as required but still a good idea. Also, you might want to relook your desire for 'western' Europe. Central (Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Czech Republic, if not Poland, Slovakia, Hungary as well) Europe and the newer EU members are either quite established or up and coming (both SLovenia and Czech surpassed Portugal in GDP last year) and in a place like Prague for example, you have Berlin, Vienna, Krakow all within a 5 hour train ride, and all of Europe 1 hour away by plane. Also, in this part of the world, the dollar goes further, and there is significantly less anti-Americanism, although I still wouldn't worry about that since if some idiot can't distinguish you from your government, I'd say he's just as dumb and Walker Texas Moron.
5 :
I think most European countries have very strict requirements when it comes to obtaining a work permit for people who are not EU-citizens. I am from Denmark, and you will only be able to get a work permit if you belong to one of the groups who are in short supply: engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, physicists, biophysicists, chemists, pharmacists, biologists, geologists, radiographers, doctors and nurses you should be able to get a work permit, otherwise not. I imagine it will be equally difficult in most European countries. Good luck.
6 :
One option is to work for an international organisation, like the UN or one of the many others based in Europe. That way you circumvent all the usual work permit requirements they have in the EU. One nice site for this is http://unjobs.org However, it's very competitive. Sometimes hundreds apply for the jobs. Switzerland has low unemployment and is a good opportunity for you if you have skills in IT, life sciences or a few others.
7 :
Listen to Jon Z, especially the parts about teaching English in the central parts of Europe. I do not have any knowledge on Western Europe and personally, with my many short stints through their airports, I feel that you'd trade one set of problems for another. Teaching in an English school, you'd find comraderie like you'd never experienced before. Just research how to get in before you go there.

What's the best way to find summer hotel work in the South of France

What's the best way to find summer hotel work in the South of France?
I want to work along the Cote d'Azur during the summer preferably in hotel receptionist work and definately not in bar work. I speak French and English but would prefer to speak more French than English. Does anyone know any websites etc. where receptionists are recruited for summer work. Please don't suggest that I go around to hotels with my CV etc. as I live in Belgium so it's too far for face-to-face interviews. Thanks for all your answers.

there might be many global hotels in south france such as hyatt, hilton etc. find their address online and why don't you post your resume?
2 :
Google the names of French newspapers and look in their classified/jobs section. They are always looking for people to work in hotels. Bonne chance!!

Which is your citizenship? If you have an european citizenship you are allowed to look for a job in Europe. If you are extra EU, and you hold an italian work permit, you can work only in Italy!
2 :
If you get a job offer in Belgium or Germany, you will have to apply for a work visa from either Belgium or Germany. An Italian work visa only gives you the right to work in Italy. Only EEA nationals have free movement to live and work in any other EEA country.

Are belgium/austria/switzerland/luxembourg good places to work/retire in

Are belgium/austria/switzerland/luxembourg good places to work/retire in?
(Please read this whole thing. I already asked this question before, but now i have more details)Im currently a resident in Florida, and im planning to get at least a bachelors in applied mathematics. I saw a similar question a few minutes ago, and there was an answer that said that you can go and work in a country that is in the EU if you have citizenship in another country that is also in the EU. Well i do, so would be better to build my career in US or Europe?I know those countries are really nice, so should i work here and then retire there, or would it be ok if i moved there to wrok after i get my diploma?

I think Luxemburg is the best (less taxes)
2 :
Just follow your hearth. Nobody can predict how the world will look like in 10 years. If you think you will make a good career US is the best option. You have to take in account too the language barrier in the beginning. All the countrys you mentioned are Dutch, french or German speaking. Switzerland is even not a member of European Union, so the rule of the membership is not valid there. Europe is more social and the cultural Facilities are wider. The pesion is much higher in europe (but who knows what it will be in 10 years...) comparing a Belgian/french company with a US-company based in belgium: a european company is more hierarchical structured. I know nobody who went live and work in Luxembourg because of tax reasons because the money you saved that way, you will have to spend on living.

Health Insurance Belgium

Health Insurance Belgium?
My wife and I have recently relocated to Antwerp, Belgium. She is dutch and already has insurance in Holland since she is working there. So my question is since it seems that insurance and work go hand & hand. Is there a way to just get insurance in Belgium without having work yet? and if so what's the website and is there a comparison website?

i think the best thing you can do is contact a health insurance fund. you'll find some usefull information (i hope) on https://www.socialsecurity.be/site_fr/citizen/Infos/general/02_04/index.htm?lang=fr&action=home&id=4125 this site comes in french, dutch and german, not in english ...
2 :
Basic health insurance is covered, both in the Netherlands and Belgium, by the government. In Belgium the best way to comply to the regulations to be insured is to be employed. People living of social welfare are also covered. But your situation is somewhat different I guess. Anyway you should enroll in either the government health fund or one of the private funds. The largest fund in Belgium is the Catholic one: www.cm.be. The government fund in Antwerp: http://www.caami-hziv.fgov.be/gd-antwerpen-N.htm In the Olijftakstraat 7, Antwerp (government fund) they should be able to answer your questions. Additional health insurance can be offered/provided for by an employer or individually taken. These additional insurances are also offered by the large funds (CM / Socialist Fund / Neutral Fund) and private insurance companies.

Belgium War Graves- Careers and Internships.

Belgium War Graves- Careers and Internships.?
I loved visiting the In Flanders Field Museum in Ypres a few years ago, and as a result I always wanted to do a gap year/voluntary work in Belgium. I really don't know where to begin and how to go about it... just wondered if anyone had any ideas or suggestions :-) I'm in my first year at Uni now, and was wondering about doing something for 3 months in the summer. Any ideas??? I'd be so grateful :) x I'm British. I was thinking voluntary work. Thanks x Thank you- this has really really helped me. :-) I'm not a gentleman hahaha...I'm a girl. But thanks!!x

Do you want to work around the War Graves or does not matter what or where you want to work? In the first case you can start by contacting: - the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, this organisation take care of the British war graves http://www.cwgc.org/ - the people of the IJzertoren in Diksmuide also can use volunteers. This organisation works around Peace, Freedom and Tolerance http://www.ijzertoren.org/? (it seems they can use an technical editor for their website also) - in the small village "Mesen" there is an Irish Peace Park. Maybe they can use someone to help. http://www.mesen.be/website-en/116-www.html For other volunteer work you can start checking these sites: http://www.volunteerabroad.com/Belgium.cfm http://www.4icj.com/be/10-seasonal-jobs-volunteering.htm http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listings/work/volunteer/volunteer_in_belgium.shtml http://europa.eu/youth/volunteering_-_exchanges/index_be_en.html and of course you are always welcome to do my housekeeping for free ;-)
2 :
Dom what can I say this is fab?not many young people want to do this and I for one think this is the making of a fine young gentleman, remember you will need accommodation and money for food and I know that for a volunteer its not really a thing that is done in Belgium but maybe Ypres is different!good luck I would check here in Briton first at the army to see if they can correspond for you?

It depends where in Belgium. If you'll be living in Brussels then don't worry, it's a very international city with lots of music festivals and things to do. I'm sure you'll meet other teenagers with common interests.
2 :
People seem to forget that Belgium has 3 official languages (and Dutch is the most spoken language by 60% of the inhabitants), and there are differences between the Flemish, Wallonie and Brussels regions. But OK, you speak English. So contact with other teenagers will be no problem. Almost every teenager speaks English. In Flanders English spoken movies and television shows get subtitles so you can follow them. In Wallonie they prefer to dub the programs (like in France). Music is very popular with a lot of shows and festivals in every city. The summer festivals (Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop, Dour Festival are the biggest) are very popular. If you do any sport, find a sportclub, it is a good way to meet new people! I'm sure you will like it!
3 :
Which part of Belgium? Flanders or Walloon? In Flanders you will be learning Flemish and in Walloon, French. You should be fine - Belgians are tolerant, friendly people.
4 :
the weather is horrible!!! - but there's loads to do and plenty of opportunity for young people. expect to not be treated so nicely.
5 :
It depends WHERE you are going to live in Belgium. In the Flemish part you are OK with English. In Brussels and the Walloon not. For Larry: have you ever tried to speak something other than French in the Rue Neuve? Be serious! Another of your problems is that you come from an Arab country. Although there is a great difference between Arabs from Nord Africa and the Middle East I am afraid you will have to bear with some racist reactions, caused by extremist position of some legal and illegal Moroccans here. Rock: lots. Ever heard of the Werchter International Rockfestival? All the best.
6 :
It all depends on where you are going to be living. But you will have no problem being able to communicate with people your own age. Most people your age speak English and speak it well. Everybody I've come in contact with in Belgium has been extremely nice. I've been a few times and my brother lives there as well with his wife and they love it. As a teenager I'm sure you'll quite enjoy Belgium but since I'm not sure where you are going to be living I can't really say whats good for teenagers. But enjoy your time in Belgium. Its a great place to live.
7 :
You will probably end up in one of the international schools in Brussels and will get your education in English. So you are most likely to hang out with your english speaking school friends who's daddy or mummy also got a job in Belgium and moved there for the purpose. Now for the generalisations ... People? Most are as shallow as they come. They drink copious amounts of alcohol, queue by number because they are not civilized to queue without and if there are no numbers be prepared for some elbow attitude. Music Festivals? You missed them, they're all in the summer Teenagers? Most are willing sheep to the consumer industry Anything? They DON'T just speak French in Belgium. Ask your daddy to clarify.

See Belgian nationality rules below... it depends on your birthdate. If you were born outside of Belgium after 1967 you may have lost Belgian nationality.
