Can I use UK TV and VCD/DVD in Belgium? They work for playback of things, but I can't receive sound. Why not

Can I use UK TV and VCD/DVD in Belgium? They work for playback of things, but I can't receive sound. Why not?
Recently moved to Belgium, took all my stuff with me, and I'm setting up a UK VCR on a Belgian TV and while the picture is perfect, I don't seem to be able to get any sound either directly, or through recorded playback of Belgian TV. Is there some problem with compatibility? Also, when the Belgian TV gives up the ghost (it's already a bit dodgy) will I be able to just use my UK TV in its place?

A friend of mine took a Dutch TV back to the UK and also had problems with the sound. I think it is a standard problem, but I am not technical enough to know why. Try to ask a TV shop for the reason, or ring the manufacturers of your TV
2 :
We took our TV/DVD player and changed the plugs. We can watch it perfectly over here. The VCR we can't because we lost the manual and can't tune it in. The one thing that definitly turns out to be useless though is my lovely digital radio!!! They have got no digital radio stations over here :-(

I have a laptop (in USA); I will be goin to Belgium for 15 days for a conference. Do I need a special adapter?

yes most european plug outlets don't accomodate american technology. try best buy
3 :
you will need an adapter, avalible from radioshack, if i am not mistaken, you will also need a voltage converter, but they can tell you for sure. be certain to take your laptop and power cord with you to radioshack so they can get you exactly what you need.
4 :
Just take a voltage convertor (110v - 220) with you, that's what i think you might need.
5 :
the sharper image I believe sells adapters that you can use that will convert the electrical current. If not sharper image, brookstone. You may even be able to find them at an airport, not sure if your airport as mega shopping.
6 :
It has been few years since i was there, but i do think you will need a transformer, do to the difference in power out put there
7 :
yes ypur laptop will work on belgium or anywhere in europe, regarding your power adapter usually most of the power adapter are autovolt menas it works on 110 V or 220 v just look at your power adapter label there is a voltage specifications when you see 110-240 vac means it is a autovolt converter no need to change buy you have to buy a adaptor plug converter most european socket use a different plug the us standard

Work in Mons, Belgium

Work in Mons, Belgium?
Any ideas on what kind of English-speaking work I can do while living in Mons, Belgium with my boyfriend this spring?
Belgium - 2 Answers

1 :
Try the SHAPE (Nato, but I'm not sure if they have temporary contracts). Another option is the airport Bruxelles South (which is actually Charleroi). There won't be that many jobs for English-speaking people in that area, but if you don't find anything you can always commute to Brussels
2 :
If you are an American, you can forget about doing any legal work unless you are lucky enough to land something at SHAPE where the rules might be different. You will never be able to get a working card for a short time unless you can find an employer who will sponsor you on the claim that no-one else can do the job. As you have not provided any clues to your qualifications, it is difficult for me to make any other recommendations as I don't know what you are capable of. If you can find an Internet-based job where your pay could be handled via the U.S. you might have some luck. I could even put a word in with my employer if you are the right kind of person as we have that kind of work sometimes. Send me an e-mail with your CV and I could give you some additional help.

You shouldn't have have to pay both, though you may be required to file a return in both countries. If you have a choice, pay US income taxes because the first $85,000 or so is exempt from income taxes (there are restrictions & requirements). http://www.software.com/page/135/us-citizens-working-overseas-faq

I am a US Citizen that wants to move to Belgium. Is it hard to get a work visa?
I have 5 years experience as a data/product/CRM analyst with specialized experience in business intelligence/statistical analysis software. I also have a Bachelor's and Master's in Mathematics. I have been applying to companies for more than one month and have yet to hear anything. Is it hard to get a work visa with my experience? My boyfriend resides in Brussels, Belgium and I am looking for a way to move there as soon as I can. Any advice on how to achieve this would be most welcome. Thank you!

My husband is French and the E.U. has standardized laws regarding work visas now so it is the same there as it is in Belgium. Aside from getting married to your boyfriend (which would automatically grant you citizenship and therefore a work permit for all of the E.U.) you need to find a company to sponsor you. Usually, the best bet is to find a U.S. company with a branch operating in the country where you want to live. Apply there for a specific opening abroad and play up your knowledge of the language (french or flemish) and the homecountry way of doing things as reasons to hire you over a local. Unemployment is high over there and you are very unlikely to find employment if you need a Belgian company to sponsor you. Good luck!
2 :
The EU rules make it very difficult for a non-EU citizen to work in an EU country without the sponsorship of a country. You might have luck signing on with a US company that does a lot of business in Belgium or in a neighboring country. Alternatively, marrying an EU citizen would give you the proper standing to work in the EU.
3 :
I'm Canadian and I got a work visa (and eventual citizenship in Belgium), so it's possible. The only way to get a work visa (without getting married to a Belgian) is to find a company here in Belgium that will hire you. They are going to have to start the procedure for obtaining a work visa for you. It could take 6 to 12 months before a work visa is granted. Once a work visa is obtained, you have to apply for a residence permit. You can do this yourself but I'm sure your company will do it. Note that you cannot by law work in Belgium while waiting for your work visa. That part sucks. It could take anywhere from 3 to 7 years before you are able to apply for Belgian citizenship (the rules change every year). If your boyfriend is Belgian, then he can officially take responsibility for you while you live in Belgium. You can't work, but you can look for work. You won't have any benefits however. If you marry a Belgian, you get citizenship in a year or two. I'm not sure, but I think you can get a work visa right away then. This is a hard and tedious process. The Belgium system is slow and full of red tape. go the the link below to put your resume online in Belgium. It is one of the better sites to put your resume. Belgium is a great country and full of opportunities. I wish you luck!

If you are serious about this matter then what follows is the legal standpoint of the Belgian Government. On 30 January 2003 Belgium became the second country in the world to legally recognize same-sex marriages. Legislation allows any gay or lesbian couple to marry in Belgium regardless of their nationality as long as one of them has lived in Belgium for at least three months. All rights accorded by a heterosexual marriage are the same in gay marriage (tax, property, inheritance law and the procedure for divorce) - there are no exceptions. A same-sex couple may also adopt children and any children born to a same-sex couple can be affiliated to the non-biological parent by means of adoption. As with heterosexual marriages, marriage can take place as long as both parties have reached 18 years of age (the age of sexual consent in Belgium is 16). Paperwork requirements: All documentation must to be taken to the marriage office in the commune where at least one of the couple lives. For many people this office will be part of the Service de l'Etat Civil/ de Burgerlijke Stant and may be located in the Maison Communale/ Stadhuis. Original or certified copies (not photocopies) of the following documents are required: * Birth certificate for both parties * Certificate of residence, showing full name, place and date of birth, last legal residence, nationality and marital status for both parties. Anyone who is not a Belgian resident must obtain their certificate from the authorities in their last place of residence. If this is not possible then ask the local Belgian authorities what is accepted. * If a partner in a same-sex marriage has been married previously (in a heterosexual or same-sex marriage) divorce certificates giving the date of the official cessation of that marriage will also be needed. Certificates and certified copies can often be obtained via the relevant embassy in Belgium for payment of a fee. All official documents issued in a country other than Belgium need to be authenticated and if they are written in a language other than Dutch, French or German, they must be accompanied by a translation from an approved translator at a cost. The link that follows explains everything you need to know about nationalization, taxation and social welfare: http://www.belgium.be/fr/famille/couple/mariage/mariage_homosexuel/ (in French).

All phones that work in England also work in Belgium. But whether you can use it depends on your contract. some phone companies block the ability to phone abroad until you ask them to open it up, and some do not allow it unless and until you pay extra. So phone your provider (Vodafone?) or walk in at one of their shops and ask whether you with your contract can use it abroad. If you are on prepaid, you will have to be extra careful, often you can top up credit from abroad, but only when you have taken top-up vouchers with you. And with prepaid it is even more likely that using the phone abroad is not open. PS, If you use it, remember to switch off your internet. That may cost you something like a pound a minute when abroad and can cost you more than your whole trip if you leave it on.

As a UK citizen you may live anywhere in Europe without prior authorization. Once you have decided where you want to go ? You just go. After 3 months of residing you go the the Prefecture to register and once you hav employment your employer will have to register you (taxes, securite sociale etc) Here is the UK gov.link to explain all the procedures: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/BritonsLivingAbroad/BeforeYouGo/DG_4000018 European citizenship at this point of European Union is very much useless since you are a member of the EU. What are the rules for working in Belgium

What are the rules for working in Belgium?
I am an American/EU citizen working for an American company in Belgium. What are the rules regarding length of employment, for example, permitted length of time here? I only have a Limosa declaration but no work visa which I assume I do not need as an EU citizen. I had heard that there was a 3-6 month limit imposed by the IRS after which double taxation would occur. I had also heard that the Belgian government limits other EU countries to 3 months prior to needing to set up some sort of residency. Regards

There are a few things I'm missing in order to help you. The length of your stay in Belgium, & wether or not you can have a perminent (or long-term) resident card, depends on which nationality you have. Citizens of a country that signed the Shengen agreement, can move/work/stay in another country that signed the agreement just by declairing they're moving there. If you're a citizen of a EU-15 country that didn't sign it: you'll have to check with the belgium embassy there, what the requirements are. If you're a member of a country that recently was added, you can only work in Belgium if you already have an employer who asks your work permit for you. Your request for residence also depends on it. The other thing is that you need to check with the regional employment office what you should do to keep stay tuned with the rules for brussels: www.actiris.be for flanders: www.vdab.Be (in dutch) you can call if in belgium: (0032) 08003070 for wallonia: www.forem.be The IRS thing isn't true. Belgian IRS has trouble to check belgian declarations, so don't worry about them, we don't. And about the residency, you should check with the belgian embassy in your country or if you're already in Belgium, with your countries embassy here. Hope this helps you...

Will be difficult, the European market is closed for foreign workers, except for special cases (specialist work, working for a foreign company,...) but even then mostly for a fixed period... Maybe you can search on the internet for Belgium companies working in this business. We have some world famous dredging companies, but then you will work somewhere around the world, like in Dubai ;-) You will earn more (I think something around 1500 euro netto a month - we have high taxes so there's a big difference between Brut and netto salary ! ) without much extras. Renting a house or apartment depends on which area, but think about at least 300-400 euro for a one-room studio...

No, but it will make finding a job very difficult if you don't speak either of these languages. In other words, you would need to have qualifications that are in high demand but are hard to find in Belgium. If you only speak French, you could possibly find a job in the South, and if you only speak Dutch, a job in the North. Of course, if you only speak one of the two, having the right credentials and qualifications will probably still be an important factor in finding a job. As unemployment is lower in the North, if you have to choose between the two, go for Dutch. Though it can't hurt to learn French as well. Being able to speak both languages however will make it a lot easier to find a job anywhere in the country. Especially in Brussels were many jobs require you master both sufficiently enough to handle customer relations.

Go to the hospital ask a doctor on staff.
2 :
this is very difficult because we have the so called Numerus Clausus that means that there is a limited number of jobs as a doctor per year and students are privileged. Even so, many students are sent away by the university because they are too many on very few jobs, so only the best ones can succeed. You'd rather try your luck elsewhere, in Belgium is hell difficult to get a job as a doctor.
3 :
It's by the RIZIV. Most of the doctors fear that organisation even when the RIZIV do so many faults.
4 :
First thing that came into mind is the Order of Doctors. Every doctor has to be registered with that order. Checked the site: only in French in Dutch. When will I be able to work after marriage in Belgium

When will I be able to work after marriage in Belgium?
My better half is Belgian and prefers that we settle in Belgium after marriage bc of his job. I'm a microbiologist and the embassy informed me that I wont be able to work for an undefinite time. Im worried I'll be redundant in Belgium after some years. Besides that, I am asian and my biggest fear is racism and how the locals would accept the presence foreigners as myself as I have no choice in this situation.

Once married, you should have no problem in being allowed to work. Racism, Belgians are pretty open, do not forget it's quite a small country, so lot's of foreigners and intercations with other countries
2 :
I think that after you get married and apply for a working permission you'll only have to wait for a couple of months until you get it and can start working. It's only a matter of a couple of months or so, not years. But whether you'll be able to work as a microbiologist in Belgium probably depends on where you got your education. The EU doesn't recognize education from certain countries or schools that have different standards than the EU.
3 :
the fact that you have a specific field of expertise should make that the bigger companies in your line of work normally have a siege here in Belgium. a lot of universities also have jobs in very specific research area. R&D is being promoted a lot here so it wouldn't be so hard. If your paperwork is all fine, you actually could start applying for jobs from the second you get settled even if you're not yet married. You just have to get a permit to work. Anyways if you already want to look for jobs here are some sites: http://www.jobat.be http://www.vacature.be http://www.vdab.be About the racism: well not everybody is equally open minded, I was born in belgium, but I'm not a belgian. So I've had my share of petty jokes and nasty remarks. But if you're an open person and outgoing you'll make friends very easily. The sooner you'll work the easier you'll get accepted, even by the more narrowminded jerks. Good luck on your search & congratulations.

consruction work in belgium

consruction work in belgium?
hi .im just wondering if any one knows what the construction industry is like in belgium at the moment as ive heard theres a bit of work there, and what the moneys like? i am a bricklayer
Belgium - 2 Answers

1 :
There is work for bricklayers. If your skill is good enough you will find work not knowing the language too. Money starts at around 12Euro/hr for lowest grade up to 22Euro/hr for the highest grade, if you have the right papers (diplomas) you will be paid according to your diploma. Alternatively you will have to work through the grades. It is the employers responsibility to kit you out with work trousers and steel toe boots or hard hat if needed. There is a bonus system in the building trade here in Belgium altough I am not sure in how far it covers temping agencies work. I can only speak from someone that has a permanent job. There is 'ancienniteit', like a loyalty bonus for stayin with the same firm, goes up every year. Another is stamps for 'weerverlet', a scheme that pays once a year for money lost due to adverse weather conditions. You also get holiday money. You get paid dole money for the days when there is no work due to bad weather. You have to fill in a card which indicates wether you have worked that day or not. But be careful cause it is under-taxed and the more dole you get, the more you might have to pay in back taxes. Same for the bonusses, they are not taxed at source so will be taxed at the end of the year. There are a few good firms but most have not so nice working conditions with very early starts and late finishes. You could work via agencies to start with and find a decent firm that will offer you a permanent contract if you are lucky. Also bear in mind that building a house UK style or building a house BE style is different so you will need time to adjust to the way they do things.

Is the processing of work permit (B) for foreigners being affected by political turmoil in belgium

Is the processing of work permit (B) for foreigners being affected by political turmoil in belgium?
How long normally is the processing time for work permit B in belgium? It was actually processed since October 2010 and I was told that it will only take 6-8 wks for me to receive it. Unfortunately, I have not received any updates yet what is the status of my application. I am just afraid that it is already affected by political instability in belgium. By the way, I am supposed to work as a nurse in flanders area.

i would not look for a job there..,first : there is alot of unemployment and second : without a certificate of school, you prolly would not find an employer that would take you there. for every job available, there are about a 1000 that want it,so you can imagine the employer can choose, and of course they only take the highest certifcates.
2 :
Hm, it will be indeed very difficult to get a job in Belgium. First of all, you need a valid visum. If you want to stay and work for a longer period (+ 6 months) it can be hard to arrange all the paperwork, and finally I think you'll not be allowed to migrate to Belgium to work. This happens only for special jobs, or on special request of your company... There are (maffia) companies who work with illegall workers, but I shouldn't to that: you're not sure you get the money, you will earn anyway only a piece of the official salary, if you get wounded you are just dumped, if they catch you you will arrive in prison and have to pay a high fence (and dont think your "boss" will help you then).
3 :
Pay attention, if you want to come and work in Belgium, you need valid certificates and you must speak French or Dutch. Unemployment is important and you could quickly be the victim of dishonest persons. Be careful ...
4 :
you can always check the site for employment in Flanders: http://www.vdab.be , check out sites like http://www.vacature.be , http://www.jobat.be they have a lot of job-offers... But it isn't easy for high-skilled people with (sometimes) several degrees to get a job; you won't find a job very easily.

Hi, If you come from outside the European Union: No. Inside the European Union you are free to work wherever you want. High educated persons get easy a work permit in the Netherlands. You need a bachelor diploma and a "key position" for a company. You can use it for 2 years and 11 months. This website can be handy: http://ec.europa.eu/eures/home.jsp?lang=en Regards, Alexander

It is pretty difficult to find a job in Belgium, at first you have to be able to speak all 3 official languages-French, Flemish nd German....
2 :
You need the language means Dutch in the Flemish part and French at the south part(also in Brussels). Please think twice before moving to here, there's even no work here for the Belg's, still they scream on TV there so many unfilled jobs here.
3 :
If you are not a citizen of an EU member state, I believe you will either need a professional card (carte professionnelle in French) to be self-employed or a work permit (permis de travail) to work as an employee. The work permit application is submitted to the authorities by the employer, for a carte professionnelle you have to apply through the Belgian consulate in your home country.
4 :
Take a look at the site below...you might find all the answers there... When in Belgium, just go to the local council and ask them what to do... Things you should bring with you as they could prove to be use full : off course your passport (you couldn't get here without ^-^), a certificate of being born, your diploma's, all other official documents you can think about... As some one else already said, you have to be able to speak dutch or French, if not, you'll have a hard time finding work...
5 :
You will need a Rijksregisternummer and a SIS card. A Rijksregisternummer is issued through 'Vreemdelingendienst' (foreigners police/immigration services) at the local town hall (gemeentehuis). A SIS card is issued by the 'ziekenfonds'. The Belgians are obsessed with diplomas so whichever you have bring them along. Passport photos will come in handy too. The one thing you will need for most jobs is to speak fluent Dutch and/or French depending on where you live/work.
6 :
two right hands, a lot of courage, boldness, bravery, daring, valour, gallantry and prowess. How more languages you can speak the better !!! And of course the neccessary papers. go to www.belgium.be
7 :
You'll need your visa, birth certificate, and anything else you need to speak to somebody at the embassy about exactly what you'll need. Also brush up on your Flemish, French, and Dutch languages. Its very important that you know how to speak those languages because that will help you get a job there. I have family there and I visit often and although most people under 30 can speak English its best to know a bit of the language. Have a great time though! Belgium is fabulous. Go to Brugge---its beautiful there. Thats where my family lives.

No, you can't. Your Italian "Permesso di Soggiorno" only grants the stay in Italy and the tourist travel to other Schengen countries to include Belgium for up to 90 days within every six months period. To live and work in Belgium you will need a "Verblijfstitel / Titre de Sejour" issued by Belgium.. http://diplomatie.belgium.be/en/services/travel_to_belgium/working_in_belgium/ ..

Be careful with cards. some are odd sizes and they cost more to send, especially abroad. There should be a collection point for mail in the building. If there is a packet delivered and you are not in the postie will leve a card for it to be collected from the post office. You will need id to collect..

I want to find work in Belgium but not sure how to go about it.?
I will be done with massage therapy school in April of 2009. I'd love to go to Europe (preferably Belgium because that is where my brother lives) and work there in a spa or somewhere doing massage therapy. Does anybody know of websites I can get on to find employment and what sort of qualifications you have to have? Thanks so much in advance!

When you come to Belgium you need to have put up your residency and Visa. (depending from what country you are) It helps when you know someone before you come like your brother as then you can put his name as a sponsor on the paper work. When you are registered in a city have a visa and a pre-workpermit you can go for job hunting. Professional Massage parlours are not that big in Belgium, we have some smaller ones that are run by the owner without no staff. So finding a job in that sector will not be easy however you might set it up for your self as an independent. this could mean your degree that you will get in 2009 is not going to be sufficient and you need to take extra courses in business management. Good luck, Belgium is a nice place to stay and to start a business, it is not easy but it gives satisfaction...
2 :
http://www.jobsinbrussels.com/ hope this helps great choice great place???
3 :
Yfou should realize that as a non EU citizen, it will be extremely difficult to obtain a work permit. Apart from that as an independent entrepreneur you need a degree in your speciality and a degree in business administration. The Belgian government has a special department to find jobs for Belgians, but I don´t know whether this works for foreigners. Try vdab in google. Good luck
4 :
it is NOT difficult to obtain work permit, it just takes time! you just have to apply well i advance. Two month i'd say.
5 :
You will have to have a WORK visa... you can't just go to Belgium or any OTHER country and start working because the authorities WILL find you and they WILL deport you... at YOUR EXPENSE. I lived in Bruxelles for 2 years and knew a lot of AmeriKans who came there thinking they were going to get a job... and they were ALL caught for working illegally. Even the Post Office spies on you. If you rent an apartment and start receiving mail and your name is not on the 'list', you WILL be reported and you can expect a visit by the guys in the black trenchcoats and a visit to the Palais du Justice.

I am an Indian Chartered Accountant. I will be taking up a job in Brussels. I will be soon issued a work permit. I am planning to take my wife along with me on a spouse visa. She is an electronics engineer (from India). Can she work under the belgian immigration laws ? What is the procedure ? I had heard that she cannot take up a full time job. And if she takes up a job, her prospective employer has to first advertise for a belgian/ EU national and can appoint her only if there are no belgian/ EU nationals available for the opening.

Well she cannot takeup job without work permit... until you plan to do it illegally
2 :
to be honest i don't really know about labor laws in belgium, but this might help. i know from experience that immigration laws are pretty specific about categorizations of visas. meaning that if you are issued only a dependent visa and not a work permit, then it is illegal for you to work in that country. in most countries you should apply for a work permit OUTSIDE of that country (i.e., your country of residence). if you want your wife to be able to work while you are in begium, i suggest you apply for a job before you go to belgium. then maybe you can both go on separate work permits. you might also want to check this page: http://www.diplomatie.be/en/travel/visa/visumFicheDetail.asp?TEXTID=44253
3 :
Advise you to be a little careful with work in Belgium... Their unemployment rate is quite high and it is not sure that you are assured of a job or that you just have a work permit.. It would be best if you had a job lined up prior to going.. The wife, of course, would have to have a work permit and they are not easy to come by with the unemployment so high
4 :
depends on the contract - some people cant get their spouses to work for that reason. spouses who wanna work need to get sponsored by their own companies. other than that good luck

Do university student in Belgium work during school

Do university student in Belgium work during school?
I have been told about this 46-day "student" employment, which is the only employment that students will agree to due to the tax benefits of not working more than 46 days per year. As a result, do university students simply not work (except for a few days per year) in Belgium??
Belgium - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It is more likely the law only allows them to work 45 days per tax year. And than it would be for the benefit of the employer who will not have to pay social cotributions for that employee. Employment laws in Belgium are archaic. Casual work is next to impossible wether you are a student or not. As a results there is a black work market because not all parents can afford to support their kids all the way at university. Many students will live at home till their late 20's and will get considerable financiel help from home to get them through their studies... And If you know somebody that knows of somebody that might be able to get you some cleaning or horeca work you are lucky. Many employers won't risk it though cause if they get caught by Social Inspection the fines will be astronomical...
2 :
When I was a student, it was still something like 22 days, so things have improved. :) Traditionally, students will usually find a short term job during the holidays and mostly in the summer. The laws have been relaxed somewhat, so that they can also work all year long (be it only a single day in the weekend for example). And as long as you stay under the 46 day limit, you're hardly taxed. So for a student, you can actually earn quite a lot of pocket money in a rather short time period. Students can work longer if they want, but few choose to do so as you're not exactly rewarded for it. For starters, parents would loose substantial tax benefits as they are no longer considered fiscally responsible for their child. Secondly, wages are heavily taxed in Belgium. So it's very likely that by working longer, you would be earning less. So you would have to work considerably more days to break even again, which is not really an option for most students as they are also expected to attend school as well. On the other hand, as long as parents can meet the living expenses of their children, most students can afford not to work during the rest of the year. Secondary school is free, and attending a year of university is an extreme bargain compared to say the US. Prices have naturally gone up, but I remember that in the late 90's, my tuition fee was about 40 euros a year. As you can imagine, student loans are practically unheard of over here and so for most students, there is little financial pressure to get a job. The only ones I knew who worked above the limit were those who didn't have, or want, the financial support of their parents, and so had to take care of their own living expenses.
